


A boating trip for a father and son on Burns Ditch in Portage ended with a violent fight and the son being arrested by Indiana Conservation officers Thursday morning.
The 20-year-old man from Lake Station has not yet been formally charged by the Porter County Prosecutor’s Office. The charges being considered are attempted murder, a Level 1 felony, and battery with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony.
Conservation officers were called at 10 a.m. Thursday to Burns Ditch on the report of a violent fight.
The son had picked up a blunt object and the confrontation caused both to fall into the water, an Indiana Department of Natural Resources release said.Both the father and son were taken to local hospitals to be treated for their injuries, said Alex Neel, an Indiana Conservation Officer.
The 20-year-old Lake Station man was taken to the Porter County Jail.
The Portage Police Department, Portage Police Crime Scene Unit, Lake Station Police Department, Crown Point Police Department and National Park Rangers all assisted in the initial stages of the investigation.
