1. DAMIEN (4-2, 1-0)

The Spartans exorcised some demons by routing Etiwanda, 45-3. The Eagles had knocked the Spartans out of the playoffs in 2022 and last year they beat the Spartans, costing them the Baseline League title. It was a good sign that their defense is playing well with Caden Arellano posting two sacks.

2. CHARTER OAK (5-1, 1-0)

The Chargers looked good during nonleague games throwing the ball, so it was a good sign that running back Torry Huff had a breakout game last week. He rushed for over 100 yards and three touchdowns in an easy 43-3 win over Clare-mont to open the Sierra League. The Chargers look to give Los Osos a second straight loss this week.

3. NORTHVIEW (6-0, 1-0)

The Vikings barely broke a sweat in their Valle Vista League opener, beating Diamond Ranch 42-0. It was the Vikings’ third shutout of the season. It was the fifth time in six games that their opponent didn’t scored more than a touchdown. That could change with super-hot San Dimas next.

4. BONITA (6-0, 1-0)

The Bearcats raced to a 21-0 lead before holding on for a 27-14 victory over Glendora. Joseph Lara had 110 all-purpose yards and scored a TD. If there is a concern, it’s that they couldn’t put the Tartans away after jumping to a big lead. Still, when their defense needed to put the clamps down, they did.

5. ST. PAUL (3-3, 1-0)

The Swordsmen’s tough schedule paid off. They showed their strength up front, rushing for 299 yards in a 27-17 victory over winless St. Francis to open the Angelus League. It snapped a three-game losing streak as sophomore back Marley Luatua rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns.

6. LA HABRA (5-1, 1-0)

The Highlanders scored four first-half touchdowns and never looked back in their 25-7 victory over El Dorado in the opener of the new Epsilon League. Ulavai Fetuli caught a 21-yard touchdown pass and also had five sacks and an interception in one of the area’s best two-way performances.

7. MUIR (4-2, 3-0)

The Mustangs routed Arcadia 49-3 and haven’t been tested in the Pacific League. But that will change when they take on Burroughs this week for sole possession of first. The winner almost certainly will go undefeated the rest of the way to capture the league crown. The Mustangs’ defense might be the difference though.

8. BISHOP AMAT (2-4, 0-1)

Bishop Amat got starters Cam Vasquez and Ryan Salcedo back from injuries and even added transfer Jayden Murrietta in time for their crucial Mission League opener, but still came up short in a 28-21 loss at Notre Dame to drop their third straight. That was not what they needed going into their next three games, against Loyola, Sierra Canyon and Serra. The Lancers’ playoff hopes are hanging by a thread.

9. LA SERNA (4-3, 1-0)

The Lancers named sophomore quarterback Grady Long their permanent starter after he platooned with fellow sophomore Jordan Bonilla over their first six games, and did he ever make the most of it. Long threw for 429 yards and four touchdowns in their 42-18 win over El Rancho.

The Spartans showed why they might cruise to the Almont League title with a 52-0 win over San Gabriel. It was the third shutout for the Spartans, whose only loss was a 21-3 setback to La Serna.
