Former Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker will be the U.S. bench coach and former New York Yankees star Andy Pettitte will be pitching coach for returning manager Mark DeRosa at next year’s World Baseball Classic.
Matt Holliday, a seven-time All- Star, will be hitting coach, USA Baseball said Friday.
Dodgers third base coach Dino Ebel will be back from DeRosa’s 2023 staff as third base coach and George Lombard will be first base coach.
The staff also includes former major league managers Fredi González (assistant manager) and David Ross (bullpen coach) along with Brian McCann and Michael Young as assistant managers.
The tournament runs from March 5-17 with games played in Houston, Miami, Tokyo and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Japan is defending champion.
Twins’ Lopez on IL: The Minnesota Twins placed pitcher Pablo López on the 15-day injured list Friday with a strained right hamstring.
López was removed from his start Tuesday against Kansas City following 4 2/3 innings because of the injury. López is 1-1 with a 1.62 ERA in three starts this season.
He was 15-10 with a 4.08 ERA in 32 starts last year and is 55-50 over eight big league seasons.
Padres’ injury woes continue: The depleted San Diego Padres placed infielder Jake Cronenworth on the 10-day injured list with a right rib fracture.
The move came after center fielder Jackson Merrill went on the 10-day IL on Tuesday because of a right hamstring strain.
The Padres also are playing without right-hander Yu Darvish, who began the season on the IL because of elbow inflammation.
They did get some good news Friday when star Fernando Tatis Jr. returned to the lineup against Colorado. He left Tuesday night’s game against the Athletics after experiencing left shoulder discomfort stemming from a slide.
Cronenworth is batting .257 with two homers and five RBIs this season. The two-time All-Star had 17 homers and 83 RBIs in 2024.
