Colin Rea pitched five effective innings for Chicago in the majors’ first game after the All-Star break. Working around a season-high four walks, the right-hander allowed one run and four hits in his fourth consecutive win.

Boston had won 12 of 13 to surge into contention in the rugged AL East. But Lucas Giolito got off to shaky start and the Red Sox left eight runners on base in the opener of a challenging six-game trip.

Braves 7, Yankees 3: Ozzie Albies hit a three-run homer, Ronald Acuña Jr. made a spectacular throw and the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Yankees 7-3 on Friday night as both teams resumed action after the All-Star break.

White Sox 10, Pirates 1: Luis Robert Jr. homered and drove in two runs, Michael A. Taylor added a bases-clearing double and Chicago breezed past Pittsburgh, which has lost nine of 10.

Guardians 8, Athletics 6: Johnathan Rodríguez hit his first home run in the majors, Slade Cecconi went a career-long 8 1/3 innings for Cleveland as the Guardians won for the seventh time in eight games following a 10-game losing streak.

Angels 6, Phillies 5: Taylor Ward hit a go-ahead two-run homer, Jo Adell and Jorge Soler also went deep, and Los Angeles beat Philadelphia.

Reds 8, Mets 4: Austin Hays hit two of Cincinnati’s four home runs and Nick Lodolo threw seven strong innings as the Reds beat New York.

Ohtani to pitch three innings in next start: Shohei Ohtani will make his next start on the mound on Monday as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ two-way superstar progresses toward longer outings after elbow surgery.

He’ll open with three innings against the Minnesota Twins in his sixth start before giving way to Dustin May, manager Dave Roberts said.

Ohtani also pitched three innings in his last start at San Francisco last Saturday. He allowed one hit, struck out four and walked one on 36 pitches. The right-hander has a 1.00 ERA, having pitched nine innings total this season.

Tellez signed a minor-league deal with Texas on July 5 and had been at Triple-A Round Rock. The Rangers also put outfielder Sam Haggerty on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Tuesday, with left ankle inflammation. ... The Colorado Rockies reinstated Gold Glove shortstop Ezequiel Tovar from the 10-day injured list. ...
