Arjun Aujla navigated the tricks and turns at Peacock Gap Golf Course on his way to capturing the San Rafael City Championship title last year. The defending champion is back this weekend, looking to hoist the new winner’s trophy.

The fourth annual event attracted the largest field to date: 119 golfers, including 48 in the championship flight to challenge Aujla, a former Redwood High standout. Gary Lorin is not back to defend his title in the 15-person senior championship flight. The winner of the two-day, 36-hole tournament receives a $750 payday. The tournament also includes men’s, women’s and senior net flights.

“This is the premier golf tournament in Marin County,” said Chris Bright, head golf pro at Peacock Gap. “We run the event as professionally as we can. We want to showcase the course to the best of our ability.

“We do our best to get the course in the best shape possible,” Bright said. “The greens are smooth but not so crazy that it makes for a long tournament. We want to keep things moving.”

The club recently acquired — or reacquired — a permanent trophy for the tournament. The trophy, which had been purchased online, had been sitting in a garage for years until the owner presented it to Peacock Gap Golf Club. In a twist, the trophy turned out to be the original 1967 Peacock Gap Club Championship award.

Aujla, a plus-1.3 handicap, could face stiff competition this year from Ryan Bell (+1.4), former Tam High and Sonoma State standout Nikolai Friedman (+2.2), Pacific Grove’s Adam Petrocelli (+1.6) and former Branson School golfer Ryan Herbst (+3.5), who is now a junior at St. Olaf College after transferring from Cal Poly. Handicaps will not be scored in the championship flight, which will use gross scores. Handicaps will be scored in the other flights.

“Looking at the number of plus-handicaps in the field, there will be some elite-level golf this weekend,” Bright said.
