With freezing temperatures and snow throughout the day, Boulder County turned into a winter wonderland for those willing to brave the cold this weekend.
Boulder received 8.3 inches of snow in 24 hours by 3 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. Longmont received four inches of snow in the same time period.
Skiers and sledders enjoyed the fluffy, white stuff in Boulder at popular sledding spots such as Scott Carpenter Park and at cross country skiing spots such as North Boulder Park.
People of all ages took advantage of the snowy landscape in Longmont, too, including at Roosevelt Park. Residents Sara Murphy and Scott Minchin came to the park to do some cross country skiing in the afternoon.
Murphy said they wanted to enjoy the “first big snow of the season.”
“We haven’t had that much this year,” she said. “Last year, it was pretty slim pickings. I was anticipating a nice snow day today.”
Murphy said she and Minchin try to cross country ski at least once a year.“I just like the gliding feeling,” Murphy said. “It’s also a really nice workout.”
Minchin said there wasn’t quite enough snow in Roosevelt Park for an ideal day of cross country skiing, but the amount was more than usual.
“There’s never enough snow,” Minchin said. “We get snow and then it’s gone in two hours.”
Minchin and Murphy said they moved to Colorado from New Jersey, and they’ve been in Longmont for seven years. As fans of the snow, they wish Colorado got more on a regular basis.
“We thought it was going to be like this every day all winter,” Minchin said of the snow. “We were driving around all night last night, too, watching it fall.”
Andrew Hernandez and Corbin Pineda, both students at Westview Middle School, played football in the snow at Roosevelt Park. Their game ultimately turned into a snowball fight.
“I love snow,” Andrew said. “I like how it looks.”
The Roosevelt Park Ice Pavilion continued to host ice skaters on Saturday. Rink attendant Zander Salva said bad road conditions can sometimes deter visitors from coming to the rink, but the pavilion remained active on Saturday.
Public Skate Hours: January 7 through March 4, 2025 Tuesdays, 1-3pm Fridays, 4-6pm Saturdays, 1-4pm Sundays, 1-6pm
“It was busy because people have classes that they’ve already paid for,” Salva said. “So it’s not like they’re going to not come to those.”
