BROOMFIELD >> With its innate ability to shoot from any spot on the floor, its aggressive thievery and its all-out attack on the glass, it’s no wonder why Broomfield girls basketball is considered one of the best teams in Class 6A.
Going into Friday night’s 67-14 home win against Centaurus, the Eagles were ranked No. 5 in CHSAA’s Selection & Seeding Index and now enjoy a 9-0 record. Their greatest asset, aside from the usual X’s and O’s, is their depth.
Eleven girls got on the board, but none produced as much offensively as senior Sydney Deem and junior EJ Harper, who each netted 11 points.
Freshman Reece Gilpatrick, standing at 6-foot-3, added a strong post presence that helped the Eagles gain their footing after a slow first quarter. She ended her night with eight points but aided her team with a number of second-chance looks when it needed it most. Her junior sister, Paige, had six points.
“We all trust each other enough where we were able to pass through everybody,” Gilpatrick said. “Everyone’s able to get a shot off and really trust each other. It’s really great. Our height allows us to pass over people and finish high, which is really helpful on a team like this.”
Another freshman, Addi Esping, gave the Eagles an added boost late in the contest, after all the starters bowed out, before finishing with nine points.
While the Eagles are continuing their winning ways under head coach Mike Croell — even if it’s to a greater degree than normal — Centaurus has been writing a different story this season under first-year coach Mark Pacheco.
The team that finished 5-17 a season earlier already has five wins under its belt early into January. While the Eagles overwhelmed them for the last three quarters, the Warriors not only led 9-4 early, but they ended the first frame with a 9-9 tie.
Broomfield just exploded after that.
“We’ve learned how to play basketball first,” senior Ingrid Lorton said. “We’re really running a good, five-out motion this year instead of running all plays all the time, so we’re learning how to gain basketball IQ, and it’s really important. Having that team bonding is really good for our team. These are the most positive, best people I know. All these people try so hard and it’s really nice to see, even if we go out and lose.”
The Warriors now, 5-6, will host Longmont next on Tuesday as the Eagles prepared to host No. 3 Valor Christian on Saturday.
