PITTSBURG >> An SUV crashed off Highway 4 onto tracks at the Pittsburg/Bay Point BART station early Thursday, leaving one of its occupants dead and a second person injured, and forced the suspension of train service between Antioch and North Concord for several hours, officials said.

No information was immediately released about the occupant killed, who the California Highway Patrol said was a man. A woman who was also in the vehicle was transported to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, the CHP said.

CHP Officer Daniel Gilmore said investigators had not yet determined who was driving the BMW X5.

Authorities said that around 3:45 a.m. the SUV was traveling eastbound on Highway 4 near Bailey Road went across traffic lanes, left the freeway and crashed through barriers before stopping on the BART tracks about 100 feet south of the Bay Point station.

The male occupant was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP said although the cause of the crash remains under investigation, based on initial reports it is suspected that alcohol was a factor.

At least two eastbound lanes of Highway 4 were closed for almost four hours while the CHP investigated.

At 7:47 a.m., BART said the SUV had been removed from the tracks and that repairs had been made to the tracks and fencing, allowing service to resume, with delays, between Antioch and the North Concord/ Martinez station.

Electrical power to the tracks was shut down so that the crash could be investigated and measures taken to remove the vehicle. There was significant damage to BART’s third rail and track infrastructure, which were repaired after the vehicle was removed.

Because of the crash, BART started its morning service with no trains running from Antioch to North Concord. It worked with other transit agencies to get more bus service to connect East Contra Costa riders to the North Concord Station before the service resumed.
