There were no state champions among the San Gabriel Valley athletes at the CIF State Track and Field Championships on Saturday, but several performed well.

South Pasadena’s Omar Soufi came close to a state championship in the boys shot put at Buchanan High School in Clovis, finishing second with a personal-best throw of 60 feet, 11 inches.

Clovis North’s McKay Madsen won the title with a mark of 69-11, which is the best throw in the state by more than seven inches.

For Soufi, it was a great way to finish the season.

Soufi won the CIF Southern Section Division 3 title with a throw of 58-5 on May 17 and was third at the Masters Meet at 56-7 1/2 on May 24.

La Cañada’s Katie McGuiness was the area’s top girls performer, finishing third in the long jump.

Long Beach Wilson’s Loren Webster won the state title with a jump of 21 feet, 1/4 inch. Jurupa Valley’s AB Hernandez, a transgender competitor, had the second-best mark at 20-8 3/4.

River City’s Brooke White finished third overall (19-4 1/4) and McGuiness (19-4 1/4) was fourth. However, both were moved up one place on the final standings because of a rule change the CIF State implemented for this year’s meet so that biological female athletes would not lose medal spots to a transgender athlete.

White was awarded a second-place finish and McGuinness moved to third and earned a bronze medal.

The CIF announced the rule adjustment Thursday with a statement that explained: “A biological female student-athlete who would have earned a specific placement on the podium will also be awarded the medal for that place and the results will be reflected in the recording of the event.”

McGuiness, who is committed to the University of Notre Dame, was second in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 finals and had a personal best of this season of 20-4, which she did at the CIF-SS Division 3 prelims.

La Serna’s Grant Miller came up short in his bid to win boys 1,600 meters. Miller finished fifth in 4 minutes, 7.45 seconds.

Miller won the Masters Meet and was second in the CIF-SS Division 1 finals.

Arcadia junior Charlotte Hopkins showed a strong kick in the girls 3,200 to finish fifth in 10:15.41. That capped a strong couple weeks for Hopkins, who finished third in the CIF-SS Division 1 finals.

South Pasadena’s Abigail Errington, a Princeton commit, finished just behind Hopkins in sixth place. Errington finished in 10:19.47. The sixth-place finish matched her finish in state last season.

Errington’s best performance this season came at the Arcadia Invitational, where she turned in a 10:05.97, the fifth-best mark in the state this season.

La Cañada’s Maya DeBrouwer, a Stanford commit, dropped to a 13th-place finish in the 3,200, crossing in 10:28.86.

DeBrouwer won the CIF-SS Division 3 title in the 1,600, finishing in 4:53.87. DeBrouwer improved on that mark at the state finals, running in 4:41.07 for 11th place.
