With the Pasadena Unified School District allowing some of it schools to reopen this week, Muir, Pasadena, Blair and Marshall high schools have been cleared to resume practices and games, which had stopped since the Eaton fire broke out Jan. 7.
Students are returning to school in different phases, based on the amount of damage the school suffered and its proximity to the fire zone.
Muir isn’t likely to have students back on campus until the end of the month, Muir athletic director Alfredo Resendiz said. But allowing sports to return will be good news for all of the athletes, he said, especially the ones who lost their home in the fires.
“They’re going to be elated,” Resendiz said. “They’ve been stuck at home, they’ve gone through a lot of heartache. So this will be good for them and all of us. It’s been a long two weeks.”
In Muir’s boys and girls aquatics program, there are 60 kids overall. Resendiz said 21 of them lost their homes to the fires and several others were evacuated and are still displaced.
“Our aquatics team gathered at Grant Park over the weekend and people were hugging, crying and laughing,” Resendiz said. “It’s been an emotional time for all of them. It will be nice to see them back in the pool competing.”
High school athletic teams in the PUSD have not been cleared to host games, but they have worked with their respective league officials to reschedule road games and will conduct practices at off-site locations.
The first athletic contest for Muir and Pasadena since the fire started Jan. 7 will take place today when the Muir and Pasadena girls water polo teams play a game at Arcadia High at 4 p.m.
