GLENDALE, Ariz. >> Joey Gallo is planning to try pitching after he was released by the Chicago White Sox.

Gallo went 2 for 20 in nine Cactus League games with Chicago in spring training, striking out 11 times. The first baseman/outfielder was in camp on a minor league contract.

After the White Sox announced Sunday that they had released the two-time All-Star, Gallo posted on social media that he was done with the outfield and he was going to start pitching.

Gallo, 31, is a two-time Gold Glove winner for his work in the outfield.

Twins pitching prospect Canterino to miss third consecutive season

FORT MYERS, Fla.>> Minnesota Twins prospect Matt Canterino will miss his third consecutive season because of an in- jury.

The 27-year-old right-hander had shoulder surgery last week in Dallas, the team announced on Sunday.

Canterino was selected by Minnesota in the second round of the 2019 amateur draft out of Rice University. He is 2-2 with a 1.48 ERA in 26 career minor league games, striking out 130 in 85 innings.

Canterino was sidelined for the 2023 season after he had Tommy John surgery on Aug. 24, 2022. He spent last season on the 60-day injured list with a right rotator cuff strain.
