In a stunning result, the Valley Christian girls soccer team made its senior night in San Jose one for the ages.

The Warriors handed St. Francis — the Bay Area News Group’s top-ranked team — a 1-0 defeat in West Catholic Athletic League play on Wednesday.

It was St. Francis’ first loss this season to a team other than No. 2 Archbishop Mitty.

The shocking outcome dropped St. Francis’ record 14-2-1 overall and 7-2 in the WCAL, and brought the Warriors to 10-5-4, 2-5-2.

The Lancers, who lost 1-0 to Mitty on Jan. 16, had just beaten the Monarchs 4-0 in their previous match.

Valley junior Maya Patience scored the Warriors’ lone goal. Freshman Audrey Pfeiffer had the assist.

Senior goaltender Natasha Hill recorded seven saves for VC to maintain a clean sheet and pick up the victory.

Boys soccer

No. 3 Menlo-Atherton 1, Aragon 0 >> M-A (14-0-4, 7-0-2) didn’t need much scoring to take down Aragon (11-4-2, 6-3) in a high-level clash in the Peninsula Athletic League’s Bay Division. Senior Nathan Thurlow scored the lone goal for the Bears, assisted by fellow senior Yandel Hernandez. Sophomore Torry Franz and Gabriel Hermosillo each took a half in goal for M-A in the shutout.

No. 7 Serra 1, Archbishop Mitty 1 >> Serra (11-4-3, 7-3-2 WCAL) and Mitty (9-3-6, 5-3-4) went toe-to-toe in San Jose, and neither side came out victorious. Samuel Feezor scored the first goal of the game in the first half on an assist from Dylan DeGuzman. But Serra responded in the final half with senior Nate Coughlin doing the honors and tying the score. Junior Luca Bertino posted seven saves in net for Serra to keep the contest tied down the stretch. The last time the teams played, Serra won 5-0 in San Mateo on Jan. 18.

Willow Glen 0, No. 10 Westmont 0 >> There would be no scoring in this Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division clash in Campbell. “We definitely outshot them and missed a few good chances,” Westmont coach Matt Schembri said. “Just one of those nights with the weather that it never seemed like the ball was going to go in. I would say we missed two glorious chances. Willow Glen worked very hard and defended really well.” Westmont’s record stands at 12-4-1 overall and 9-2-1 in the BVAL Mt. Hamilton, good enough for first place. Willow Glen is 8-6-3, 6-4-1.

Boys basketball

No. 5 De La Salle 54, No. 7 Dublin 41 >> De La Salle, playing at home in Concord, advanced to the semifinals of the East Bay Athletic League playoffs as Alec Blair scored 18 points to lead the Spartans past Dublin. Zach Arnold added 10 points off the bench for De La Salle, which bounced back from a stunning 67-48 loss to California on Friday. The Spartans played at San Ramon Valley in the semifinals on Thursday. In the other semifinal, Dougherty Valley faced California.

No. 16 Palo Alto 71, Wilcox 52 >> Palo Alto put together a workmanlike performance to win yet another game on the road in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League’s De Anza Division. Paly won the first quarter 16-12, the second quarter 18-13 and put the game away in the third quarter with a 23-13 advantage. Gavin Haase led Palo Alto with 21 points, including 17 in the third quarter and five 3-pointers. Yousef Iqtish led Wilcox with 20 points and four 3-pointers. The Vikings are 19-3, 9-1. Wilcox dropped to 12-8, 5-5.

Girls basketball

No. 11 Oakland Tech 73, Oakland 45 >> The Bulldogs breezed to the conclusion of another unbeaten season in Oakland Athletic League play by spoiling Oakland’s senior night. Jhai Johnson, with her father NFL quarterback Josh Johnson in attendance, scored 16 of her 25 points in the first quarter. Terri’A Russell scored 26 for Tech in a game that was never close. Tyliana Velasquez scored 12 points and Aujaleeyah Lewis put in eight points for Oakland. Tech improved to 17-8, 8-0. Oakland fell to 5-14, 2-5.

No. 8 Piedmont 74, Alameda 70 >> Highlanders precocious freshman Andrea Martin filled the stat sheet once again, scoring 11 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and blocking three shots as Piedmont won in West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division play. Freshman guard Jenelle Solis had 21 points and seven assists, and Taylor White and Brianna Webb each scored 11 points. Juliana Johnson led Alameda with 17 points, and Desiree Shoblo and Jennalyn Apodaca contributed 15 points apiece. Piedmont improved to 20-4, 6-1, and Alameda dropped to 15-10, 3-4.

No. 17 Northgate 42, Mt. Diablo 37 >> Hana Neuman scored 13 points and freshman Isabella Lawson chipped in 12 points as Northgate slipped past Mt. Diablo in the first round of the Diablo Athletic League playoffs. Natalie Dance was her normal productive self against a potentially stifling Broncos defense, pouring in 18 points, and wing Nya Fano scored nine. Northgate improved to 21-6, and Mt. Diablo fell to 14-12.

No. 19 Moreau Catholic 57, American 38 >> Elisa Ortega scored 12 points and Mahlaysia Atkins and Kylah Isidro each had 10 as Moreau Catholic improved to 18-7 and a perfect 13-0 in Mission Valley Athletic League play. Shirina Shi was, as she so often has been this season, American’s leading scorer with 18 points. Freshman Anika Batra scored 13 points against the league’s top team. American dropped to 19-6, 8-5.
