Memorial services for former President Jimmy Carter will play out over the next eight days, including a state funeral in Washington, D.C., and ceremonies in Georgia before he is buried in Plains, Georgia, according to plans that have been in the works for years.
While no formal announcements have been made, the plans call for Carter to be taken by motorcade to Atlanta. There, he will be brought for a brief stop at the Georgia state Capitol before arriving at the Carter Center, which has been the home of his post-presidential philanthropy and other activities.
Carter is set to lie in repose at the center for about 36 hours before being flown to Washington for the traditional nationally televised ceremonies that have marked previous presidential deaths. According to the plans, he will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol for a day and a half before the state funeral at Washington National Cathedral.
After the cathedral service, where President Joe Biden is expected to speak, Carter will be flown back to Georgia and taken by motorcade to Plains, where he will be interred in the family plot.
