A day after winning his fifth Gold Glove Award, Matt Chapman was named a finalist for the Silver Slugger Award at third base.

Chapman, who has never won the Silver Slugger, finished his first of many seasons in San Francisco with a .247 batting average, 27 homers, 78 RBIs and a .790 OPS, his highest mark in a full season since 2019 (.848). Chapman’s 15 steals were also a career-high, eclipsing the 11 total steals he recorded in the first seven years.

The other two finalists are San Diego’s Manny Machado and Philadelphia’s Alec Bohm. Machado stands as the favorite -- he hit .280 with 29 home runs, 105 RBIs and a .797 OPS.

The last Giant to win the Silver Slugger Award was Buster Posey in 2021, one of five times he won one. The last Giant to win both the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger in the same season was Brandon Crawford in 2015.

Ex-Giants GM joins Braves >> Buster Posey announced during his introductory press conference that Pete Putila would transition from being the Giants’ general manager to another role in the organization. Roughly a month later, Putila is set to work for a new team entirely.

Putila will be joining the Atlanta Braves as the team’s assistant general manager of international scouting.

Additionally, the Texas Rangers announced that they have hired Justin Viele, who had coached for the Giants since 2020, as their new hitting coach. Viele will be reunited with Donnie Ecker, who was one of San Francisco’s three hitting coaches in 2020 and 2021. Ecker now serves as Texas’ bench coach and offensive coordinator.

Putila was hired by former president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi in October 2022 and spent two seasons as the Giants’ general manager in 2023 and 2024. During that time, San Francisco went 159-165.

Posey decided last Friday to replace Putila at general manager with Zack Minasian.
