


Santa Cruz’s John Mel saw his heat win streak end Friday, but that didn’t prevent him from advancing to the quarterfinals at the World Surf League’s BTMI Barbados Surf Pro at Soup Bowl, Bathsheba, Barbados.
Mel goes against Sebastian Williams of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, in Heat 3 of the quarterfinals when action resumes.
Men’s and women’s competitions are being held at the contest, a Qualifying Series 5,000-point event. The contest window runs through Sunday.
Mel is one of two Americans remaining in the competition. The other, Ryan Huckabee of Flagler Beach, Florida, posted the highest heat score (15.67) in the Round of 16.
Huckabee faces Carlos Munoz of Costa Rica in Heat 1 of the quarterfinals.In other quarterfinals, Lucas Cassity of Baja California Sur, Mexico, faces Josh Burke of Long Beach Christ Church, Barbados, in Heat 2, and Lucca Mesinas of Máncora, Peru, faces Jacob Burke of Long Beach Christ Church, Barbados, in Heat 4.
After winning his heats in the Rounds of 64 and 32, Mel posted a two-wave score of 12.30 in Heat 4 of the Round of 16 and finished second to Jacob Burke (12.50) in the 25-minute session, held in 4- to 6-foot waves.
Kai Kushner (11.93) of Manhattan Beach took third and was eliminated, as was fourth-place finisher Sage Katz (9.23) of Puerto Rico.
Kushner finished tied for ninth overall and earned 1,575 points. Katz tied for 13th overall and earned 1,440 points.
The Live Like Zander Junior Pro In Loving Memory Zander Venezia, a 1,000-point Junior Tour event, is also being held at the surf break and Santa Cruz’s Adam Bartlett is still shining.
Bartlett (12.93) took second behind Cassity (18.50) in Heat 3 of the Round of 32 to advance.
Bartlett goes against Luke Wyler of San Clemente, Will Deane of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, and Carl Burger of Flagler Beach, Florida, in Heat 1 of the quarterfinals when action resumes.
