If you’ve always wanted to visit the Michigan Science Center (Mi-Sci) here’s your chance.

The MiSci and Axalta Coating Systems of Mount Clemens have teamed up to host Community Free Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Special programming will focus on transportation fun as Axalta features its 2025 Global Automotive Color of the Year, “Evergreen Sprint.”

“We’re thrilled to partner with Axalta to debut ‘Evergreen Sprint’ as their 2025 Color of the Year,” said Christian Greer, president and CEO of Mi-Sci in a news release. “Color is more than just about aesthetics, it represents a very powerful tool for science that unlocks the mysteries of the Universe and shapes how we experience the world around us. ‘Evergreen Sprint’ not only evokes the thrill of speed and technological innovation but also reminds us how color science enriches our lives, influences perception, and drives creativity.”

The new color, a rich, deep forest green also pays homage to the legendary British racing green, a shade that has come to symbolize speed and performance such as that associated with the finest racing machines.

The event is also presented in partnership with the Detroit Grand Prix and the Keifer Foundation, which will also have educational activities for guests focusing on racing and safety.

“Axalta has been a proud supporter of Mi-Sci for several years through our Axalta Bright Futures program,” said Dan Naugle, vice-president of Mobility Americas at Axalta, and board of directors for Mi-Sci. “We’re committed to making a positive impact in the communities where our employees live and work. Through free days like this one, we have a great opportunity to support and engage with our community while helping others learn about Axalta’s passion for innovation, better living, and a sustainable future.”

Visitors who attend Saturday’s event will find a host of exciting, hands-on STEAM activities. Guests will have the chance to visit Mi-Sci’s reimagined Kids Town exhibit for youngsters five and under, watch live science demos and unleash their creativity by building unique vehicles with transportation-themed Blue Blocks, Nudel Kart and Dinosaur Bone Builders by Imagination Playground.

Made of soft, durable foam, the Blue Blocks will allow even the youngest scientists to safely design and engineer their creations. The Nudel Kart, crafted from lightweight wood, will break down into loose, interchangeable parts—letting imagination lead the way in building vehicles or inventive structures. Dinosaur Bone Builders lets kids craft a fierce carnivore, gentle herbivore, or an entirely new species created from their imagination.

As with many events, guests will have access to the center’s hands-on exhibits, live demonstrations, a Smithsonian Spark!Lab, STEM Playground and more, plus the Tyrannosaurs: Meet the Family exhibit upstairs. Tickets to the Toyota 4D Engineering Theater, which also features 3D shows, will be available for purchase at the box office.

Tickets for Community Free Day are free but must be reserved in advance. For more information or to make reservations visit mi-sci.org.The Michigan Science Center is at 5020 John R St., in Detroit.
