A few days of light rain are headed to the Monterey Peninsula, just in time for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, but it’s not expected to cause too much disruption, such as last year.

The rain is expected to start on Friday and continue through Monday, with a total accumulation ranging from half an inch to 1.5 inches according to the National Weather Service. The rainfall will be light and spread out, reducing the risk of flooding.

“We don’t have a concern for flooding right now because the rain will be spread out throughout the weekend,” said Rachel Kennedy, a meterologist with the National Weather Service Bay Area, headquartered in Monterey. “It’s looking like rounds of light rain throughout the day and there are days where we’ll only see some drizzle.”

Thursday afternoon will be mostly cloudy through mid-morning, then becoming sunny with a high near 56 degrees. That trend is expected to continue into the evening before the rain starts Friday morning around 10 a.m.

It’s also expected to warm up this weekend, rising into the 50s and 60s.

“We are holding off on any frost or freeze advisories right now because it looks like temperatures are actually going to increase into the weekend,” Kennedy said. “Worse case scenario we may get into the 40s, but not into freezing temperatures.”

The low clouds may create some airplane delays, but car travel isn’t expected to be impacted by the rain.

Last year the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was cancelled after a storm swept through, with winds knocking down structures and powerlines. For a time, Pebble Beach was put into a shelter-in-place.
