The retro sounds of a classic pop group will usher in the new year at Theatre at the Center in Munster.

The Four C Notes are ready to dole out the hits of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons at 6 and 10 p.m. shows Dec. 31.

When it comes to uniqueness in American entertainment, the Chicago-area tribute group fits the bill because it “sings songs of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, exclusively,” according to John Michael Coppola, who formed The Four C Notes.

“There are lots of other tribute groups around that say they’re Frankie Valli tributes, but then they throw in a whole host of songs from other artists of the era — that is a ’50s and ’60s revue,” Coppola said.

The New Year’s Eve audiences at Theatre at the Center will be regaled with memorable pop fare such as “Sherry” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” both chart-toppers from the early 1960s.

“The show they’re going to see is going to be 100 percent Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, from start to finish,” the 44-year-old Coppola assured. “This is all we do. We do not do any other types of artists in our shows.”

The Skokie resident has a tie-in to a smash musical that tells the story of Valli and his legendary group.

“I was part of the Chicago company of ‘Jersey Boys’ for the entire two-and-a-half-year run,” Coppola related. “I was the understudy for the role of Frankie Valli.”

Aside from portraying Valli a few times, Coppola also notched other stage experience in the Windy City run from fall 2007 into January 2010.

“I covered three roles in the ensemble,” the actor related.

With The Four C Notes, Coppola continues his professional association with the enduring music of Valli and the Four Seasons — members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

“It’s very memorable and very catchy,” said Coppola, a tenor with falsetto range. “You heard it on the radio, and it gets stuck in your brain, sort of. It rings true to people.”

At 32, The Four C Notes baritone Adrian Aguilar did not personally experience the heyday of Valli and company, but nevertheless is drawn to their music.

“I grew up on this music,” said Aguilar, an Evanston resident. “My parents raised me on a lot of oldies.”

Of all the hits that will be sung by The Four C Notes in Munster, a solo tune from Valli that reached No. 1 in 1975 is especially enjoyable for Aguilar to perform.

“The one that is the most special to me is definitely ‘My Eyes Adored You,’” said Aguilar, noting he gets the chance to prominently display his vocals on that number.

Although Coppola is considered the group’s lead singer, each member is entrusted with some lead vocals during the performance.

Additionally, there are expectations as far as hitting a certain vocal range, according to Aguilar.

“Every one of The C Notes is definitely required to hit some tenor notes throughout the night,” said Aguilar, whose father, Alfredo, resides in Hammond.

Backed by a seven-piece band, The Four C Notes will present New Year’s Eve shows in Munster that each include a countdown to midnight, a toast to the New Year and a rollout of “Auld Lang Syne,” according to Coppola.

He noted that the early show will feature “sort of a mock countdown” that reflects the spirit of signaling in 2018.

Group rates and a cash bar also will be available for the New Year’s Eve shows, while an on-site buffet dinner is likewise being offered as a complement to each performance. Dinner buffet seatings are at 4:30 and 8:30 p.m.

Regarding the name of the night’s entertainment, Coppola says “A C-note is a slang term for a hundred dollar bill.”

Valli and the Four Seasons started connecting with the masses in 1962, and went on to notch 30 Top-40 tunes by 1976, including the No. 1 hits “Walk Like a Man” and “Rag Doll.”

“Their demographic that they played to were mostly blue-collar people,” said Coppola, noting Valli and his colleagues were blue-collar New Jersey natives themselves.
