Nanette Mercurio passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in San Francisco, her parents eventually settled in Pittsburg, California. She attended Pittsburg High School.
Agifted student, she went on to graduate at the top of her class from the U.C. Berkeley. Her lifelong passion for learning and education became the foundation of a remarkable career and legacy.
Nanette dedicated over 50 years to the Pittsburg Unified School District, beginning as a teacher and later serving as a counselor and administrator. Her work touched the lives of countless students and families, offering support, guidance, and compassion to generations. Even after retiring, Nanette continued to mentor new teachers for an additional 5 years-always committed to uplifting others.
Her Catholic faith shaped the way she lived—with humility, generosity, and a heart for service. Nanette believed in the dignity of every person, and her faith gave her strength and purpose.
Thanks to the rhythm of the school calendar, she developed a deep love for travel. She spent many summers exploring Europe—often leading educational tours—and also enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
She loved sharing stories of her adventures.
Nanette regularly attended live theatrical productions, the symphony, and appreciated music of all genres.
An avid reader with a sharp mind, Nanette read a book a day up to her passing—without glasses—and delighted in exchanging books with friends and family. Her enthusiasm for reading was infectious.
Nanette is preceded in death by her beloved parents; Mary and Neno Smario, her devoted husband of 60 years; Ben Mercurio, her brother; Jack Smario, and several other cherished family members.
She is survived by her daughter; Paula, and her son; John (Monica), her six grandchildren: Erica, John, Jacqueline, Carlo, Stefan, and Nicolas; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends across the country. Her zest for life will never be forgotten.
