A man has pleaded guilty in the 2023 fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl during an attempted robbery in Montbello, according to court documents.

Brandon Sandoval, 18, pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder Friday, court documents show. Other charges Sandoval faced were dismissed as part of a plea deal: two counts of murder after deliberation, two counts of murder with extreme indifference, one count of assault with extreme indifference, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of robbery with a real or simulated weapon, two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, two counts of felony menacing and one misdemeanor count of handgun possession as a juvenile.

He was arrested in January 2023 without bail in connection to the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Aaliyah Granados-Cortez on Jan. 11, 2023. In an interview with police, Sandoval said he and Marvin Perdomo-Cil, 19, planned to use a gun to rob Aaliyah and her sister, Jennifer Granados-Cortez, while meeting to purchase vape pen cartridges from them. Sandoval and Perdomo-Cil were 17 at the time of the shooting.

Sandoval threatened Jennifer Granados-Cortez, then 19, with the gun while the sisters were in their car. When they tried to drive away, Sandoval held on to the car door and shot Aaliyah when she tried to make him let go. She was taken to a hospital and died the next day.

Perdomo-Cil is charged with one count of second-degree murder, three counts of robbery with a real or simulated weapon, two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, two counts of felony menacing with a real or simulated weapon, one count of robbery while menacing the victim with a weapon, one count of robbery while menacing the victim with a deadly weapon, one misdemeanor count of providing a juvenile with a handgun and one misdemeanor count of menacing.

Sandoval’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 18, according to court documents.
