The marching bands from School District U-46’s five high schools will perform in a free public showcase at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Elgin High School’s Memorial Field, 1200 Maroon Drive.

Each high school marching band will perform a 15-minute program and then receive some feedback from a group of clinicians made up of veteran band directors, according to the news release.

The showcase performance order will be Streamwood High School, followed by Bartlett, Larkin, South Elgin and Elgin.

Mental health board OKs grants for 2 Elgin nonprofits

The Hanover Township Mental Health Board has approved funding grants for two Elgin nonprofits.

Summit School Inc. will receive $25,000 to replace deteriorating windows at its River Road facility, according to a news release.

Easterseals of DuPage & Fox Valley’s $2,870 grant will pay for therapists to receive training to work with disabled youth.

Elgin Fire Station No. 2 holding open house on Saturday

The Elgin Fire Department will be hosting an open house from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday at Station No. 2, 650 Big Timber Road.

The open house will include a building fire demonstration at 1 p.m., free eye exams provided by the Lions Club, Narcan training and fire extinguisher demonstrations, and information about hazardous materials and about the Elgin police and fire explorers programs.

Forest preserve hike, stories and craft event planned

A naturalist-led hike, followed by stories and crafts, will be held by the Kane County Forest Preserve District from 6:30-7:30 p.m on, Friday at Hampshire Forest Preserve, 44W780 Allen Road in Hampshire.

Participants will learn about nighttime animals during the hike, district officials said.

It will be followed by stories shared by Ella Johnson Memorial Library librarians, including family-friendly spooky tales and a nature-themed craft.

The free program is open to all ages.
