Warriors star Steph Curry was cleared for light on-court workouts in his recovery from a Grade 1 hamstring strain during the team’s series against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The team announced his updated status after re-evaluating him Wednesday morning. Curry partook in low-speed shooting drills while also rebounding for teammates during the morning shootaround.
He remained out for Wednesday night’s Game 5 in Minneapolis, which the Warriors needed to win to stay alive in the series. The Warriors ruled him out Tuesday afternoon for the game.
“We’re already playing to win, but when you add that extra chip on your shoulder of having Steph out, just giving him a chance to come back is huge,” Trayce Jackson-Davis said. “He’s giving us confidence and breathing new life into us. He really wants to get back, and I know he’s working super hard to get back.”
Curry will be re-evaluated again on Saturday ahead of a potential Game 6 on Sunday night back at Chase Center. The series’ three-day pause offers a window for Curry to rest without risking another loss.
Teammate Buddy Hield remained tight-lipped about Curry’s status, instead focusing on the do-or-die game at hand.
“Take this game quarter by quarter, and get our minds and energy right and play with force,” Hield said. “That’s the main objective, to get a win, survive and advance.”
Curry suffered the injury during the second quarter of the Warriors’ Game 1 win over the Wolves on March 6.
The Warriors have lost the last three games without Curry, setting them up for an elimination Game 5 Wednesday night. Their offense has suffered greatly without the greatest shooter of all time creating space for the rest of the team.
Jonathan Kuminga and Jimmy Butler have taken on the scoring responsibilities, but Butler took only nine shots during Monday’s Game 4 as he battled illness and a glute bruise he suffered during the opening round against the Rockets.
The Warriors must weigh Curry’s obvious impact on the court against the risk of re-injury.
Green fined for gambling comments
Warriors forward Draymond Green will have to pay a hefty fine for gambling-related comments made during Game 3 of the team’s second-round series with the Timberwolves.
The NBA announced it is fining Green $50,000 after he was seen telling teammates during a television broadcast that the point spread during the Wolves’ 102-97 victory was 5.5.
Green, 35, fouled out of that game in the fourth quarter, and has a league-high five technical fouls and two flagrant fouls during the postseason.
In a press release sent out by the league, the NBA said Green’s comment “questions the integrity of the game officials.”
According to the website Spotrac, Green has been fined 229 times for a total of $992,000 since entering the league in 2012.
The NBA banned former Raptors forward Jontay Porter for being involved in gambling on NBA games, including ones he played in, and Heat guard Terry Rozier is currently being investigated by federal prosecutors over his alleged role in a betting ring.
The NBA is partnered with online sports betting companies DraftKings and FanDuel.
