Novato, CA

Robert Stanley Caughie passed into rest at his home in Novato in early June. He was born in San Rafael to Stanley B. Caughie, a carpenter, and Florene Caughie nee Bateman in August of 1945, between the a-bombs and the Japanese surrender. Bob was the first son, and the third of seven children. The family moved around the North Bay in search of work and Bob grew up in Novato, Cotati, Occidental and Fairfax.

He graduated from Drake High School and later married his high school sweetheart, Maggie Saw of Mill Valley. He served two years in the U.S. Army (their idea, not his) mostly in West Germany. On returning from the army the couple took up residence in San Anselmo and raised two sons, Timothy and Edward.

He worked for Chevron in San Francisco for 25 years, and on retirement chose to go into business in his lifelong hobby, stamp collecting.

Bob worked for an auction house for a year, and when the opportunity arose he bought the Pacific Stamp Exchange shop in Novato, which he ran as sole proprietor for 32 years. He was considered a top authority on stamps for collectors throughout the country, and was affectionately known as the ‘Stamp Man’ in downtown Novato. Other pastimes included fishing, hunting and camping with his family, which was very important to him. Bob is survived by his wife (the same one), two sons and two grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held later this year.
