The Monterey County Board of Supervisors will reconvene for their first 2025 meeting on Tuesday, swearing in the new board and appointing positions for different commissions and departments.
Kate Daniels will be sworn in as supervisor of District 5, replacing Supervisor Mary Adams who chose not to run for re-election. Daniels won 60% of the primary vote back in March, giving her an early victory during the election.
Daniels previously worked under Adams, and thanked her for her support and as a mentor during her campaign. Daniels also garnered the support from multiple board members during the election, encouraging her to run.
Supervisors Luis Alejo and Wendy Root Askew were both re-elected and will take their oaths again during the swearing in.
The board is scheduled to discuss a lawsuit during closed session from the Monterey County Vacation Rental Alliance.
The Vacation Rental Alliance, a nonprofit organization of vacation rental property owners in the county, filed legal action against the county of Monterey and the Board of Supervisors back in November — opposing the board’s stricter vacation rental policies.
The group said the restrictions take away affordable housing options and shows bias against people with second homes in the county.
In the press statement, the Alliance said the new restrictions were unfair to people who had second homes in the county who wanted to rent the spaces out multiple times a year and still be able to visit the homes themselves.
They also said the board mislead the public by claiming that short-term rentals displace long-term housing.
The Board of Supervisors will meet at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 7 in the Board Chambers, 168 W. Alisal Street, Salinas.
The meeting will be available to watch online and can be streamed via Zoom at https://montereycty.zoom.us/j/224397747.
