Josiah Siqueiros, Ivan Zavala, and Ricardo Ortiz scored, and Aptos High’s boys soccer team earned a 3-0 win over San Lorenzo Valley in the teams’ Santa Cruz Athletic League opener in Felton on Wednesday.
“Overall, Aptos’ ability to posses the ball gave our team the opportunity to create many chances at goal,” Mariners coach Roberto Zuniga said. “Many were unsuccessful, but the three that we did finish gave us a good start to the season.”
Siqueiros scored the decisive goal on a pass from Nicolas Topete in the third minute.
Zavala followed up his own shot for a goal in the 30th minute, and the Mariners carried a 2-0 lead into the half.
Ricardo Ortiz capped scoring when he finished off a pass from Nami Banks in the 55th minute.
Goalie Hebert Santiago made three saves to help Aptos record its third shutout.
“I want to commend our back line for holding strong throughout the game,” Zuniga said. “Our midfielder Nami Banks’ offensive and defensive performance has made his presence known. We are looking forward to continuing to improve on our offensive power and continuing a strong season.”
On Friday at 7 p.m., defending league champion Aptos (6-3-1, 1-0-0) plays at Soquel (1-5-2, 0-0-1), while SLV (2-3-2, 0-1-0) plays at Harbor (9-1-1, 1-0-0).
At Harbor 6, Scotts Valley 0 >> Danny Garcia scored three goals and recorded an assist, and the Pirates rolled in their SCCAL opener Wednesday.
Alex Aparicio had a goal and two assists. Diego Cortes had a goal and an assist, and Gabby Melesio also scored.
Jair Martinez also assisted on a goal.
Goalie Seamus Drees made 12 saves for the Falcons (0-3-2, 0-1-0), who play at at Santa Cruz on Friday at 7 p.m.
Goalie Damian Escalante made one save for the Pirates (9-1-1, 1-0-0), who host SLV (2-3-2, 0-1-0) on Friday at 7 p.m.
Santa Cruz 2, at Soquel 2 >> The Knights’ Neil Valby scored late in the second half to secure a draw in their SCCAL match Wednesday.
Torin Miller also scored for Soquel.
Santa Cruz benefitted from an own goal, and the Cardinals’ Cutty Bauscher scored on a pass from William Ventura in the 68th minute to take a 2-1 lead.
Goalie Stephen Yee made seven saves for the Cardinals (6-4-1, 0-0-1), who host Scotts Valley (0-3-2, 0-1-0) on Friday, 7 p.m.

Miriam Abonce had a goal and two assists, and Aubrey Nualart also scored.

Pirates acquire de Geus >> The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired right-handed pitcher Brett de Geus, a 27-year-old Cabrillo College alum, from the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations.
de Geus, who was designated for assignment by Toronto on Friday, went a combined 0-2 with a 7.15 ERA in 13 relief appearances in 2024 with Seattle, Miami, and Toronto. He gave up nine earned runs over 11 13 innings.
Boys basketball
Watsonville 67, at Marina 53 >> Diego Garcia made five 3-pointers and scored a team-high 19 points, and the Wildcatz won their PCAL Mission Division game Wednesday.
The Wildcatz (8-2, 4-0) gained sole possession of the division lead with Rancho San Juan’s loss to Hollister. The Trailblazers (9-5) dropped to 3-1.
Watsonville led 32-17 at the half.
Leon Madec scored 15 points for the Wildcatz, and George Madec added 11 points.
Watsonville hosts Seaside (0-13, 0-4) on Friday at 7 p.m.
North Monterey County 55, at MVC 51 >> Nico Downie scored a team-high 13 points before fouling out in the Mustangs’ PCAL Mission Division loss Wednesday.
Jerry Arceo Jr. made three 3s and finished with 11 points for MVC (6-6, 0-3), which led 44-43 after three quarters.
Kenji Mellin scored game-high 24 points for the Condors (8-6, 3-1). Arnulfo Jimenez scored 12 points.
MVC plays at Marina (5-10, 0-4) on Friday at 7 p.m.
Men’s basketball
Cabrillo 82, at Foothill 74 >> Freshman guard Walzel Evans made three 3-pointers and scored 21 points, and the Seahawks won their Coast Conference South Division game Wednesday.
“Walzel Evans was outstanding,” Seahawks coach James Page said.
Freshman forward Dai’shaun Buie scored 18 points for the Seahawks (11-8, 3-0). Sophomore guard Max Parmigiani scored 14 points, and sophomore Cullen Cleaves scored nine points.
Parmigiani took two charges in the last minute, and made two free throws to put Cabrillo up by five, and seal the win.
“We had some really good moments and built double-digit leads consistently throughout the game but could never hold on to them,” Page said. “Give Foothill credit, they played well, shot it well. I have a lot of respect for Mike Reynoso (the Owls’ head coach) and his program. That’s not an easy place to play, conference road games are the best challenge for teams.”
Freshman guard/forward Will Ambidge scored 17 points for the Owls (4-15, 0-3). Freshman forward Miles Bonilla scored 15 points, freshman guard Wyatt Sparling scored 13 points, and freshman guard Axel Castrejon scored 12 points.
Cabrillo, a state tournament qualifier last season, hosts defending state champion West Valley (15-3, 2-0) on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Women’s basketball
Cabrillo 76, at Foothill 44 >> Freshman forward Gabby Brooks made two 3-pointers and scored 26 points, and the Seahawks won their Coast Conference South Division game Wednesday.
Freshman forward Jess Berry scored 12 points for the Seahawks (13-6, 2-0). Sophomore forward Renee Parker scored 10 points, and freshman guard Sydney Chesnut made two 3s and scored eight points.
Sophomore guard Xochitl Neely made five 3s and scored 22 points for the Owls (6-13, 0-2). Freshman guard/forward Nyla Ware scored 10 points.
