George Olen Homer Jr., a beloved and larger-than-life character, passed away on September 6, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of Super Silver stores, sports concepts, common sense, humor, and determination. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on December 20, 1939, to George Homer Sr. and Juanita Homer, George's journey was one of great accomplishments, adventure and ambition.

George had a wonderful childhood, filled with love from his grandmothers and endless neighborhood baseball games. By the age of ten, he was already working in his father’s flower shop, Homer’s Flowers, helping with deliveries and tending the store. He developed his lifelong love for flowers and gardening that stayed with him throughout his life.

After graduating from Thurston High School, George received a scholarship to play baseball as a pitcher at the University of Detroit before transferring to Michigan State University, where he earned a degree in physical education and athletics. George began his career as a math teacher and PE coach, but his restless spirit soon led him to seek something with more action. In 1967, he joined Ford Motor Company’s World Headquarters, where he met Cheryl. The two were married in 1970, and together they shared 54 years of love and adventure.

In 1969, George and Cheryl made the bold move to California, eventually settling in Santa Cruz, where George’s entrepreneurial spirit blossomed. In 1974, he launched his first major venture, Homer’s Shirts and Sweaters in Capitola Village. But George's love for the game never waned. In 1975, he began working with the San Francisco Giants, consulting with Bob Lurie, and played a key role in bringing Maury Wills to the team, helping to turn the Giants around—a proud accomplishment George held dear.

Throughout the 1980s, George continued to expand his business ventures, opening beachwear stores on Beach Street in Santa Cruz and other California locations. In 1992, he founded Monterey Bay Pearl Company, wholesaling pearls nationwide. His entrepreneurial journey reached new heights in 1995 when he opened the first Super Silver store in Capitola Village. Over the years, George helped open 14 Super Silver locations across California and North America. His business acumen and love for making deals were unmatched, and his ventures helped shape many people's lives.

George’s love for family remained a cornerstone of his life. He was always ready for a road trip, frequently visiting relatives and taking his well-earned title as the "road dog" on many adventures. His sharp mind and near-perfect memory made him the ultimate navigator, knowing every shortcut and backroad across the country.

An avid sports fan, George’s passion for the game knew no bounds. But his love for games extended far beyond sports—whether it was dominos, cribbage, pinochle, poker, or horse racing, George was always up for a challenge or a bet. In 1974, he claimed the world championship title in dominos, a testament to his competitive spirit and problem-solving mind.

George had a deep love for all animals and was known for stopping to greet every dog he encountered. At his stores, he always kept treats and water ready for his furry visitors, who knew they’d find a friend in him. Pets of family and friends alike adored George, always running to him with excitement.

George’s personality was truly one-of-a-kind. He could be cantankerous and fiercely opinionated, but he was also warm, witty, and could light up aroom with his infectious humor and smile. Never afraid to speak his mind. He had an uncanny ability to entertain everyone around him.

Above all, George was deeply loved. His kindness, encouragement, and larger-than-life spirit touched countless hearts, inspiring those around him to push harder and speak their truth. He was a driving force. His presence was a gift, and his legacy will live on in the many lives he touched.

George was a man who never disappointed—an unforgettable soul who left this world brighter than he found it.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Cheryl Homer; his sister-in-law, Linda Fahrner; dear friend, Yvonne Zannis; business partner and friend, Jacki Truhitte; and many other cherished friends.

Celebration of life to be announced.
