Injuries continue to pile up among New York Yankees starting pitchers.
Marcus Stroman has been placed on the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation, the Yankees announced Saturday.
The move came a day after Stroman allowed five runs in two-thirds of an inning in Friday night’s 9-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants.
Following that rain-shortened loss, manager Aaron Boone revealed Stroman had said the knee was “bugging” him. Stroman had X-rays done at Yankee Stadium on Friday before he underwent additional testing at an area hospital.
Boone said the right-hander was set to meet with the team doctor. The manager acknowledged the knee issue could have played a role in Stroman’s rough outing.
“For him to come out and at least say something, it could be, on some level, a factor,” Boone said.
Stroman is 0-1 with an 11.57 ERA in 9 1/3 innings through three starts this season, his second in a two-year, $37 million contract with the Yankees.
Last year, the right-hander went 10-9 with a 4.31 ERA in 30 appearances, including 29 starts, but he pitched to a 5.98 ERA after the All-Star break and was not used in a playoff game.
Stroman has an $18 million option for next season that would vest if he pitches 140 innings this year.
The Yankees began the season with three pitchers on the injured list, including ace Gerrit Cole, who underwent season-ending elbow surgery last month, and Luis Gil, who is expected to be out until at least June with a lat strain.
Clarke Schmidt is expected to make his 2025 debut within the next few days after working his way back from right rotator cuff tendonitis.
NATS’ ABRAMS OUT
The Washington Nationals placed shortstop CJ Abrams on the 10-day injured list because of a right hip flexor strain.
Abrams first experienced discomfort during the Nationals’ home series against Arizona last week and it then flared up again on Friday, when Washington opened a road series in Miami. He was removed after the third inning and underwent an imaging test Saturday that confirmed the strain.
“I told him today to get this thing to calm down and get it right so it doesn’t become a bigger issue,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said before Saturday’s game. “In a week and a half hopefully he’ll be ready to go.”
The 24-year-old Abrams has four homers through his first 11 games this season.
“CJ wants to play every day,” Martinez said. “He wasn’t happy about it. But this was the second stint that it was bothering him. We’re going to try to get him all healed up so it’s something that he won’t have to worry about for the rest of the year.”
He had 20 home runs, 65 RBIS and 31 stolen bases in 138 games last season.
CARDS’ WINN hits IL
The St. Louis Cardinals placed shortstop Masyn Winn on the 10-day injured list and activated infielder Nolan Gorman.
Winn left the Cardinals’ 2-0 win against Philadelphia on Friday night with back spasms, and the team decided to take a safer approach to keep Winn healthy long term.
Wynn is batting .222 this season after .267 with 15 homers and 57 RBIs as a rookie in 2024.
When Winn left in the first inning Friday night, backup catcher Yohel Pozo entered at second base while rookie Thomas Saggese took over Winn’s spot at shortstop.
Saggese was in the lineup at shortstop Saturday, with Brendan Donovan at second base and Gorman available off the bench.
Gorman had been out since early April with a right hamstring strain and returns without a minor-league rehab assignment.
