The Santa Cruz Boardriders club took fifth place at the U.S. Boardriders National Championships at Lower Trestles on Saturday, and secured a berth to the World Club Championship.

SCBR finished with a total score of 123.85 and finished behind Encinitas Boardriders (165.56), San Clemente (138.64), Space Coast (128.38), and Huntington Beach (127.72). Wrightsville Beach Boardriders (88.16) took sixth among the finalists.

Nat Young had the whammy wave, which doubled his score to a 19.86, and teammate Shaun Burns (7.33) secured first place in the 30-39 division for SCBR.

Whammy waver Peter Mel (13.66) and Josh Loya (5.33) helped SCBR (18.99) take second to Encinitas (23.39) in the 50 & up division.

Whammy waver Brody Price (13.66) and Adam Bartlett (8.10) led SCBR (21.76) to second behind Encinitas (22.67) in the 15-19 division.

Whammy waver Alessandro “Alo” Slebir (9.20) and Austin Laurance (4.00) helped SCBR take third in the 20-29 division.

SCBR took fifth in the 40-49 division (19.87) and women’s division (17.11), and posted a 5.73 total for sixth in the 14 and under division.

The 2026 World Club Championships will be contested over two legs in January, with the first leg at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast, and the second and deciding event at Trestles.

High school softball

Scotts Valley 5, at Santa Cruz 4: Senior Jazzy Doubek had four hits, one RBI, and a run scored in the Falcons’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League makeup game to close the regular season Saturday.

Sophomore Lorelei Warner had a hit and two RBI for the repeat SCCAL champion Falcons (21-5-1, 14-1). Sophomore Chloe Kent had two hits, one RBI, and a run scored. Senior Taylor Wilson had a hit and scored twice, and freshman Jillian Oing had two hits.

Lucia Curley had three hits, including a trip, two RBI, and scored for the fourth-place Cardinals (7-16, 5-9). Ellia Dunton had a hit, one RBI, and scored a run. Molly Pisciotta and Tezdyn Medina-Mates each had a hit and run scored. Rona Lewis had a hit and one RBI.

Wilson pitched two scoreless innings and earned the win.

The CCS seeding meeting takes place Monday afternoon in San Jose and the first round of the playoffs begin Saturday.

High school baseball

At Palma 9, Aptos 8; 8 inn. >> Isaiah Work had two hits, including a home run, four RBI, and scored twice in the Mariners’ extra-inning, nonleague loss Saturday to close the regular season.

Cole McGillicuddy and Dom Castillo each had two hits and two RBI for the Mariners (10-17), the fifth-place finisher in the SCCAL. Chris Verdia and a hit and two RBI, Samuel Garcia had three hits and scored a run, and Damien Espinoza had two hits and one RBI.

Senior Johnny Carnazzo had two hits, including a home run, two RBI, and scored twice for the Chieftains (21-6), the Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division champion.

Rocco Razzeca pitched two innings of scoreless relief and earned the win for the Chieftains, who trailed 8-5 through six innings. Mikey Slaughter took the loss.

At Willow Glen 9, MVC 3 >> Sophomore Parker Brown had a hit and two RBI in the Mustangs’ nonleague loss to close the regular season on Saturday.

Senior Aiden Mcdaniel had two hits and scored a run for the Mustangs (21-6), the runner-up in the PCAL Mission Division. Sophomore Aidan Miller also had two hits.

Senior Max Seipke and Austin Korba each had two hits and two RBI for the Rams (21-6), the third-place finisher in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Mount Hamilton Division.

Willow Glen trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the third inning and scored nine unanswered runs the rest of the way.

Senior Dante Pini earned the win in relief.

At Leigh 10, Scotts Valley 1 >> The Falcons lost were held to one hit in their nonleague finale Saturday.

Scotts Valley (12-15) qualified for the CCS playoffs by finishing third in the SCCAL.

Senior Gio Olvera had three hits, including a pair of doubles, three RBI, and scored one run for the Longhorns (21-6), the BVAL Mount Hamilton Division champion.
