WEST COVINA — Senior Jo Jo Moreno came within one out of completing a seven-inning no-hitter for South Hills against visiting San Dimas in a Hacienda League game Friday afternoon.

The reason — the senior lefty ran out of pitches due to a mandated pitch count of 110. But big junior right-hander Justin Romero calmly recorded the final out on the next batter to complete a combined no-no for the Huskies in a 7-0 shutout.

It was all Huskies, who had six batters with at least one hit, highlighted by a five-run first inning. All five runs were charged to freshman right-hander Josh Calcanas.

San Dimas senior pitcher Joseph Layva relieved Calcanas in the first and held the Huskies to two hits and two runs in relief.

Moreno, who picked up his first win of the season against no losses, allowed only three base runners by way of walks, but struck out eight Saints in his 6 2/3 innings of work.

“I knew I had command from the first batter,” said Moreno, who flirted with a perfect game into the third inning when he walked his first batter. “When I had that one-two-three first inning, I think that energized our offense.

“I was frustrated to come out, but you work the whole time and go 6 2/3 innings, but I’m very happy for the win. It’s a good feeling.”

Moreno struck out the second batter of the seventh when he hit the limit.

San Dimas junior infielder Jayden Claros opened the seventh with a line drive that was rapidly dying, but junior left fielder Paxton Czubek leaned down and snagged the ball for the first out of the inning.

“That was definitely the play of the game right there,” Moreno said. “I also think (Ayden) Vieth (third base) made a couple plays out there, along with Noah (Esquival) in right. They just had my back out there.”

Paxton, who walked, scored a run and had a sacrifice, recalled the play in left.

“It was definitely a pretty big play, and I was definitely thinking I’m going to have to leave my feet, but I ended up getting there without laying out,” he said.

The Huskies (6-3, 2-0) opened the game with five runs on five hits in the top of the first inning to give Moreno plenty of cushion for the next six innings.

Sophomore short stop Diego Villarreal, who is second on the team with nine hits this season, led the Huskies with two hits, the first which was a double to right sending junior first baseman Gabe Guerrero (Double, run, walk) across for the first run of the game.

The first five batters all scored for the Huskies.

Following Villarreal, Vieth (2 runs, single), Czubek and junior second baseman Carson Baker (2 RBIs, BB, R), they all scored to lead 5-0.

Baker, center fielder Zack Escalera (single, RBI) and designated hitter Wes Manning (single, RBI) had the last three RBIs in the inning.

After the final out of the game, the team surrounded Romero and Moreno to celebrate the combined no hitter.

“I have not come in to save a no hitter before but (Friday) was my first,” said Romero, of his first and most important save of the young season. “I wouldn’t have wanted to do it for anyone other than this guy right here.”
