WATSONVILLE >> The older people get, the more likely they are to experience changes in their eyesight. According to the National Institute on Aging, this can include losing the ability to see objects up close, needing more time to adjust to changing levels of light and having trouble distinguishing between different colors such as blue or black.

The institute recommends regular eye checkups, and health insurance company VSP Vision Care is providing exactly that through its Eyes of Hope campaign. The company is providing mobile clinics throughout the Central Coast where people can have their eyes examined for free, having stopped at El Sausal Middle School on Monday and also preparing to stop at Gilroy Senior Center Wednesday and Thursday and finally at Community Bridges in Watsonville Sunday.

The clinic is open patients of all ages and is geared toward those unable to afford access to vision specialists.

“This event is designed to address the urgent eye care needs within our community, particularly for those who face challenges accessing vital services,” Community Bridges officials wrote in a news release. “Vision is fundamental to daily life, education, and employment opportunities, yet countless individuals go without the essential eye care they require.”

Patients will receive complimentary eye exams as well as a free pair of glasses or other eyewear tailored toward their vision needs. Participants will be eligible if they have not received eye care through VSP within the last 12 months, have no private or government vision coverage and meet the following family income guidelines: up to $29,160 for one person, $39,440 for two people, $49,720 for three people, $60,000 for four people, $70,280 for five people and an additional $10,280 for each additional person.

In addition to VSP, this event is also sponsored by Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas who represents the Central Coast and was also spoke at Monday’s event in Salinas.

The event is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Community Bridges, 521 Main St., Watsonville. Space is limited, so participants are encouraged to register in advance at bit.ly/3NoY16w. For more information, call (831) 724-2997.
