Seniors across Royal Oak will see new renovation to the Mahany-Meininger Senior Community Center, improving facilities and services.

Improvements are slated for completion this August, bringing several improvements to the beloved senior community space. Upgrades will include renovated restrooms, on par with ADA standards, new flooring and ceiling tiles, fresh paint, new lighting and other electrical modifications.

Despite renovations, the center’s most utilized services to seniors, including the Royal Oak Senior Essential Services, or ROSES, which provides home chores, yard, and lawn work, and the Adjacent Generational Exchange, commonly referred to as AGES, offering counseling and support services, will continue.

“We’re really fortunate to be partnering with our friends at the Royal Oak Public Library to move staff over there temporarily so they will have a space there. And out of the library, they’re going to be offering some of our most essential services,” said Nikki McEachern, Superintendent of Recreation.

Some services will see relocation in an effort to accommodate the overhaul. Summer evening fitness programs will be moved to the Salter Community Center. Yoga classes and group meetings will be temporarily staged across the city’s parks.

“Many of our instructors already have had many classes in the parks when it’s nice weather and enjoy doing that,” said McEachern.

Although the center is closed, the kitchen area will provide staff limited access to continue to feed seniors who receive meals. Additionally, seniors can receive congregate meals at neighboring centers in Clawson and Troy.

As the summer continues to heat up, the senior center’s cooling services will transition to the ice rink to continue to accommodate those who need a break from the warm weather.

“On that vein, it also credits a lot of our partners who’ve been working with us to help us increase our offerings for temporary cooling centers,” said City Manager Joseph Gacioch.

Last week, the city provide a cooling center that helped out residents at Royal Oak Manor, which lost power.

The 3500 Marais location will remain closed through mid-August with completion anticipated before the start of the preschool school year. Transportation and travel services will continue. Seniors are encouraged to contact Yolanda Botello McClain at 248-709-4763 for more information on the renovation or services.
