Colorado fans will get a glimpse into a new era of Buffaloes football Saturday during the Black & Gold scrimmage, but it will also be a day to honor two of the greatest players to ever come through the program.

On Monday, CU announced that Shedeur Sanders’ No. 2 and Travis Hunter’s No. 12 jerseys will be retired during the annual spring game at Folsom Field (2:30 p.m., ESPN2). The ceremony will take place at the start of the spring game.

Sanders and Hunter will join a select group of only four other players in CU history to have their numbers retired: Byron White (No. 24, 1935-37), Joe Romig (No. 67, 1959-61), Bobby Anderson (No. 11, 1967-69) and Rashaan Salaam (No. 19, 1992-94).

Both projected as first-round picks in the NFL Draft next week, Hunter and Sanders are two of the most decorated players in CU history.

Last year, Hunter became just the second player in CU history — along with Salaam in 1994 — to win the Heisman Trophy.

He was one of the most honored players in college football history, also adding the Walter Camp, Associated Press and Sporting News player of the year awards; the Biletnikoff Award (nation’s top receiver), the Bednarik Award and Lott Trophy as top defensive player, and the Paul Hornung Award as the nation’s most versatile player.

Hunter was a unanimous first-team All-American, the Big 12 defensive player of the year and a first-team Academic All-American.Sanders won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, one of three honors that go to the top quarterback in the country.

He was also named the Big 12 offensive player of the year and was first-team All-American by several publications and second-team by the AP.

Sanders shattered CU’s single-season school records for passing yards (4,134), passing touchdowns (37) and completion percentage (74.0%). He also set Division I records for career completion percentage (70.1%) and most consecutive games with at least one touchdown pass (49).

White had his jersey retired on Nov. 3, 1938; Romig’s jersey was retired during the spring game on May 11, 1963; and Anderson’s during the spring game on May 9, 1970. Salaam’s jersey was retired during halftime of a game against California on Oct. 28, 2017.

Although “retired,” White’s No. 24 and Romig’s No. 67 were brought back into circulation last year, by cornerback Preston Hodge and offensive lineman Kahlil Benson. Hodge (No. 24) and Benson (No. 67) wore patches to honor White and Romig, respectively.

No player has worn Anderson’s No. 11 since it was retired, but current Buffs safety Tawfiq Byard is in that jersey this spring.

Salaam’s No. 19 will remain out of circulation for a total of 19 years, until 2036.
