The Woodland Joint Unified School District is now accepting applications to fill the vacancy on its board of trustees for Area 6 follwing the resignation of Trustee Morgan Childers earlier this month.

Applicants must reside in trustee Area 6, be a registered voter and be over 18 years of age. A map showing the boundaries for the area can be found at www.wjusd.org on the board vacancy web page. To confirm the trustee area number that is designated for your address, contact the Yolo Elections Office at (530) 666-8133.

Area 6 is an L-shaped area comprised mainly of the southwest corner of Woodland. The northernmost point begins at West Lincoln Avenue and extends east to West Street. The area’s southern border ends at Del Oro Street and extends east just shy of East Street.

Community members with a strong interest in serving all students and families in the Woodland School District are encouraged to apply.

During a regular school board meeting Thursday night, trustees added a March 16 special meeting in the event more time is needed to review applications or interview candidates.

According to the updated timeline on the district’s website, on Tuesday, March 14, the ad hoc committee consisting of Trustees Emily MacDonald, Deborah Bautista Zavala and Noel Rodriguez will review the candidates for eligibility under the Ed Code 35107.

Trustees will review or interview applicants during the March 16 meeting for 20 or 30 minutes, depending on the number of applications. If there is a high volume of applicants or a decision is not made on March 16, the board will hold a special meeting the following Monday, March 20, to make an appointment.

It is not likely, but if more time is needed, the board will continue the selection process until Thursday, March 30.

Ten days following the appointment, whether it be March 16, 20 or 30, a public notice will circulate notifying Area 6 registered voters about the appointment and that if they would like to petition the superintendent for an election to fill the vacancy. A petition must be made within 30 days of the appointment.

The applicant selected will serve on the board until Dec. 13, 2024. At that time, an election to fill the remainder of the trustee Area 6 seat will occur, and the winner will serve through 2026. In 2024, three other seats, Areas 3, 4 and 5, are up for reelection, and the Area 6 seat would add a fourth election.

Online applications are available on the district website’s homepage under “Latest News” and on the “Board” web page. Hard-copy applications are also available in the superintendent’s office at 435 Sixth St., in Woodland. Completed hard-copy applications can be mailed or hand-delivered to the superintendent’s office or submitted via email to maribeth.villalobos@wjusd.org.

The deadline for applications is Friday, March 10, 2023, by 4 p.m. For more information, contact the superintendent’s office at (530) 406-3203.
