Castro Adobe to hold spring open house

Celebrate the 175th anniversary of the historic Castro Adobe in the countryside of Watsonville at the spring open house from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27. Decorate Cascarónes, a colorful Mexican tradition of eggshells filled with native flower seeds, that you can crack for good luck. Listen to live music in both the famous fandango room while strolling through the adobe’s beautiful garden. Tour the recently restored two-story adobe hacienda with its new interpretive exhibits and knowledgeable docents available to answer your questions. And don’t forget to visit thepop-up Parks store with gifts, books and more.

Spring craft fair at the Grange

The Aptos Grange is having their 3rd annual spring Arts and Crafts Fair April 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2555 Mar Vista Drive. Free admission and parking. Come meet 36 local artists, great food for sale and a raffle with all proceeds to go to Quilts of Valor sewing group. Genealogy virtual lecture scheduled

Sign up to attend the online lecture “Get transcribing with Transkribus!” hosted by the Genealogical Society of Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz Public Libraries at 1 p.m. May 6. The guest speaker will be Pamela Brigham, president of the Silicon Valley Computer Genealogy Group. She believes in using technology as a tool to help break through brick walls and to tell her family’s history. Brigham teaches genealogy classes on a wide variety of topics, having earned a certificate in genealogy from Boston University.

Transkribus is a website that generates a transcription of a handwritten or typed document. The program has been trained to recognize older handwriting in various languages which can be helpful in transcribing documents that are difficult to read into legible versions. Come learn how Transkribus can help your genealogical research.

Santa Cruz Works to host CEO Works luncheon

How do you go from building a website for a diner down the street to a client roster that included Google, Salesforce and the U.S. State Department? Soon after he and his partner started a web development firm, presenter Feras Alhlou realized that the industry was becoming commoditized. In this session, participants will learn how early-stage businesses can recognize when a pivot is needed for survival and how later-stage founders must stay alert and nimble for growth opportunities beyond their primary business focus.

Chorale presents ‘Palestrina Leads the Way’

Over 500 years ago, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina composed his masterpiece, the Missa Papae Marcelli (Pope Marcellus Mass), which became a model for the following centuries of polyphonic music. The piece transcends time and offers enduring solace for modern ears. The Chorale presents the mass in an innovative format by interspersing its parts (Kyrie, Gloria, etc.) with works by modern composers (Arvo Pärt, Randall Thompson, Charles V. Stanford).

The performance will be held at 8 p.m. May 17 and 4 p.m. May 18 at Holy Cross Church, 123 High St., Santa Cruz. Tickets are $30 for general, $25 for seniors and $5 for students and can be purchased at santacruzchorale.org or 800-316 8559.

Santa Cruz Launchpad set to return

Santa Cruz Launchpad, previously known as Get Hired, will be held May 21 and features an exciting combination of student business pitch competition from 1-4 p.m. plus a community career fair that is free and open to the public from 5-7 p.m. Connect with employers, find internships, entry level jobs and opportunities for new and seasoned professionals in a variety of industries. Nonprofit Senderos presents Oaxacan cultural events

On April 23, Branciforte Small Schools, 840 N. Branciforte Ave., will lead a sidewalk parade at 5 p.m. down Water Street and Pacific Avenue, ending at Cooper Street for a downtown street fiesta from 6-8 p.m. with music and folkloric dancing, including instruction (no food for sale).

On April 24, an evening of Mole and Music at Branciforte Small Schools will feature Oaxacan chefs preparing Mole dinner for sale and a banda of visiting Oaxacan musicians.

The 20th annual Vive Oaxaca Guelaguetza festival will be on April 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m at Branciforte Smalls Schools. Admission to the Indigenous cultural festival, which highlights the food, dance, music and artisans of Oaxaca, is $10. Kids 5 and under are free.
