With the backstage drama over money now resolved, organizers of the summer-opening Mount Clemens classic car cruise are back to promoting this weekend’s event.
The 33rd annual Moran Chevrolet Mount Clemens Cruise hosted by the Friends of Mount Clemens, the longest-running car show in metro Detroit, takes place Saturday with pre-registration festivities taking place Friday.
“The new big thing this year is we’ll be giving out a $500 cash award to the best overall car as chosen by our chairman,” said Steve Charlie, a spokesperson for the Friends group.
Hundreds of hot rods, classic cars, vintage vehicles and motorcycles take their place on city streets to be judged.
The family-flavored event is a proven crowd favorite even with non-car fans as Mount Clemens comes alive with plenty to see, do and hear.
Highlights include:
• A free Hot Wheels racetrack will be set up for kids 10 and under the clock near Mount Clemens Coney Island on Main Street. Each kid will receive one free car to race on the track and take it home with them
• A free Coloring Contest, for kids 10 and under, will held at the Discovery Center at 54 Cherry Street. First-place is a $50 gift certificate.
• A free “Touch a Truck” will be held on Market Street between Main Street and Gratiot Avenue from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
• A couple of bounce houses will be on hand on Market Street
• A 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner from the “Fast and Furious 7” movie will be on display, courtesy of event sponsor Xpert Office Solutions
A week ago, Charlie said a cash crunch threatened to halt future cruise events. But after a report was published in The Macomb Daily online and in Sunday’s newspaper, a couple more sponsors have stepped up to provide the funding and the issue is now resolved, he said Wednesday.
Mother Nature looks to be cooperating as well.
According to the early forecast from the National Weather Service, the highs both days will be in the mid 70-degree range with a chance of evening showers on Friday when pre-registration will be held 5-9 p.m. along with an open cruise. On Saturday, registration begins at 7 a.m. for a static car car show. An awards ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. followed by an open cruise until 9 p.m.
Proceeds from the car show will go to a variety of charities.
