It’s almost time. College football is about to ramp up again.

Here is a closer look at some of the key matchups heading into the season:

When does college football start?

There are a handful of games next Saturday, including No. 10 Florida State taking on Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland. Led by defensive end Patrick Payton and offensive tackle Darius Washington, the Seminoles are a popular pick to repeat as Atlantic Coast Conference champions.

Florida State and Georgia Tech kick off at 9 a.m. PDT. Also on the slate next Saturday: Norfolk State faces Florida A&M in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Atlanta, and SMU visits Nevada.

On Aug. 31, No. 1 Georgia plays No. 14 Clemson in Atlanta, No. 8 Penn State visits West Virginia and No. 19 Miami is at Florida. Riley Leonard and No. 7 Notre Dame visit Connor Weigman and No. 20 Texas A&M.

Velasquez pleads no contest >> Former UFC champion Cain Velasquez has pleaded no contest to attempted murder after he shot at a man in 2022 accused of molesting Velasquez’s relative, a Northern California district attorney’s office said.

The office of Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a statement that Velasquez entered his plea in a San Jose courtroom Friday to felony assault and other gun charges as part of a negotiated agreement with the prosecutor’s office.

The 42-year-old Velasquez was scheduled to go on trial next month. Velasquez, who retired from the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2019, still faces prison time, said Rosen’s office. A sentencing date has not been scheduled.

The man charged with molesting the male relative, who was 4 at the time, is the adult son of the woman who ran the daycare attended by the boy.

Golf

Rahm takes lead >> Jon Rahm finished eagle-birdie-birdie for an 8-under 62, giving the Spaniard a two-shot lead over Brooks Koepka and three others in LIV Golf Greenbrier.

The Old White course at the West Virginia resort was as vulnerable as ever — only six players in the 54-man field were over par through two rounds — and it led to a bunched leaderboard.

Rahm, coming off an Olympic disappointment when he went from a four-shot lead to not even getting to the podium, was at 14-under 126.

Coughlin leads Women’s Scottish Open >> Lauren Coughlin rolled in a bending, 20-foot putt as part of three birdies on the closing stretch to cap off a 6-under 66 in the Women’s Scottish Open and give her a one-shot lead over Megan Khang at Dundonald Links.

Coughlin picked up her first LPGA Tour title three weeks ago in Canada and put herself in position to lock up a spot on the U.S. Solheim Cup team.

Coughlin was at 12-under 204.

NFL

PRESEASON GAMES >> New York’s Daniel Jones threw two interceptions, one which was returned for a touchdown in his first action since a season-ending knee injury last year and the Houston Texans beat the Giants 28-10 in preseason action. Jones tore the ACL in his right knee on Nov. 5 and had recovered for the start of training camp but was held out of New York’s preseason opener. He played until halftime Saturday and was 11 of 18 for 138 yards. ... Caleb Williams made another good impression in his first appearance at Soldier Field since Chicago drafted him with the No. 1 overall pick, running for a touchdown and leading two scoring drives, and the Bears beat the Cincinnati Bengals 27-3.
