Reds 8, Rockies 5

Tuesday at Goodyear Ballpark

On the mound: Kyle Freeland had a decent outing as he continued his strong spring. The veteran southpaw had a 1.80 ERA in five innings coming in, and followed that up with 4 2/3 innings of two-run ball, with eight strikeouts and no walks. His spring ERA now stands at 2.79. Tyler Kinley also put up a scoreless frame as he’s yet to allow a hit or run through four Cactus League games. Victor Vodnik pitched a scoreless seventh, working around a hit and a walk. But the game came unglued in the eighth, when Seth Halvorsen gave up the lead. He was hammered for five runs on three hits and two walks in 2/3 of an inning. He has a 9.53 spring ERA.

At the plate: The Colorado bats were quiet until the seventh, when the Rockies broke out with four runs. Zac Veen mashed his second homer of the spring, a three-run jack 441 feet to right-center, and finished 2 for 2 to raise his average to .290. Then in the eighth, Yanquiel Fernandez had a solo homer, his first of the spring. Beyond those two players, the Rockies only had six other hits.

Prospect watch: Second baseman Adael Amador was 1 for 2 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk, and is hitting .296 with a .472 on-base percentage this spring.
