Power went out for about 31,000 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers Saturday afternoon in an outage that was fixed in about an hour.
The outage, reported at 12:55 p.m., affected Mid-Wilshire, Mid-City, Arlington and Koreatown, department spokesperson Lourdes Rodriguez said.
Crews started restoring power around 1:30, and the lights eventually were back on for everyone affected, she added.
But it wasn’t before the Los Angeles Fire Department received nearly 60 calls for people stuck in elevators since 1 p.m. due to the power outage, department spokesperson Margaret Stewart said.
The outage affected people in various ways.
Los Angeles resident Zix Peng was heading to Koreatown from West Los Angeles for a hair appointment around 1 p.m.
“Traffic wasn’t expected but our ETA kept getting longer,” she said. “All the traffic lights weren’t working.”
Fortunately, she was able to reschedule her appointment for the same day. Though the salon’s lights were on, Peng said there was only cold water coming out of the faucets.
David Le was in the middle of a shift as a server at Liu’s Cafe in Koreatown on Saturday afternoon when the power went out.
“It was a full house — 40 or 50 people in there having a good time,” Le said. “We had a line of at least 20 people outside.”
The employees had to switch over to handheld devices and pen and paper to keep taking orders while the power was out.
Though the kitchen was without electricity, much of the food was in large pots and pans that had retained their heat and were able to be brought to guests.
Despite the inconveniences, Le said customers were patient and understanding.
“Everyone was laughing at the situation because it was so absurd,” Le said. “I think it was a nice community moment. They didn’t add more pressure to a situation that was already a lot of pressure.”
Le also said his roommate informed him that the power at his apartment, over a mile from the restaurant, was out.
The cause of the outage was under investigation.
