The”I’m better”, “No, I’m better” fanciful shoving match between Fairview and Boulder continued its one-way route on the girls’ soccer pitch Tuesday night.

As if it was a left-out script, unwrinkled and used again, the Knights dominated possession and in chances as part of the annual game, scoring an 18th straight goal in the series, winning 4-0.

For local connections in a sea of them at Christian Recht Field, Delia Barkett scored the first goal of her high school career against Boulder County United club teammate Scout Hubble. Uber-forward Claire Silverman added her team-leading seventh goal of the spring season, pushing the Knights’ win streak over the Panthers to nine seasons.

“It’s super fun going against our rival high school,” said Barkett, who was seen chatting warmly with some Boulder players afterward. “Obviously it’s just another league game, but it’s really important to all the girls on our team because we know a lot of them over there.”

For Fairview, led by its 13 seniors, the win — among other things — served as a bounce-back performance from a 2-1 road loss to Castle View on Saturday.

In all this spring, the Knights (5-2-1, 2-0 Front Range League South) completed an impressive nonconference schedule last week that included a win over No. 7 Arapahoe, as well as a draw against what was then a nationally-ranked top-10 team (United Soccer Coaches) in Valor Christian last week.

In another week, they travel to 5A No. 1 and USC No. 4 Broomfield.

“It was important for us to have a good showing because in our last game, against Castle View, we didn’t have our best performance,” Fairview coach Steve Griggs said. “Girls were upset about that and had a little chip on their shoulder coming into today to set things right. They played a lot better tonight.”

For Boulder, it was another tough test — and hoped learning experience — for a team that plays 10 underclassmen most of the time.

The Panthers (1-6, 0-2), even in a fifth straight loss, know they need to focus on the bigger picture with such a green roster. The team got even more inexperienced after they lost senior standout Ava Werner to a season-ending injury last month.

“I have a feeling this group believes in (themselves) more than any other team I’ve ever coached. Ever,” Boulder coach Carlos Real said. “They have each other’s back and never give up, as you can see. We’re looking at it as a long game.”

Silverman opened the scoring in the 13th minute on a setup from Payton Larson, who forced a turnover in Boulder’s own box, then made a short crossing pass to her for the finish. It was Silverman’s second goal in the series and first since she was sophomore in 2021.

After that, fellow senior Teia Lita scored her first of the season in the 38th, Barkett the first of her career in the 51st and Anna Hrywnak added her third of the year in the 77th.

Meanwhile, Boulder’s best chance to break a six-season-long scoreless streak against the Knights came in the 53rd.

Sophomore Mia DeJohn’s 28-yard free kick required a diving save from keeper Alyson Campbell. Campbell then had to hit the ground again to scoop up the rebound from Neva Woodson. The Panthers’ last goal in the series is still Allyson Murphy-Pauletto’s from March 29, 2016. Thirteen different players from Fairview have scored in the rivalry since.

Thursday, Fairview will look for its third straight win to open league play, hosting Northglenn.

Boulder is at Monarch on April 18.
