Resident of Moraga

Beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, physician and friend, Norman Livermore passed peacefully on February 5, 2025, after an 18-month journey with pancreatic cancer. He lived every day to the fullest, meeting each challenge with characteristic optimism, patience, and grace. He loved spending time with his family in the mountains, working on projects around his ranch, cheering on his favorite basketball teams, taking time to really connect with his patients and their families, and indulging in ice cream whenever possible.

An orthopedic surgeon who had practiced in Walnut Creek since 1982, Nori took pride in the relationships that he built with his patients as he helped them return to the activities that brought them joy. Serving others brought him joy in return, and he continued to perform surgery and see patients until only a few weeks before he died. Nori also treasured the longstanding relationships that he developed throughout his 43 years as a surgeon at John Muir Hospital, valuing the collegiality and friendship of his fellow physicians, and deeply appreciating the inestimable contributions of the hospital staff.

Raised in San Rafael, Nori spent four rewarding high school years at The Thacher School in Ojai, CA. Ever the outdoorsman, he also worked several summers as a mule packer in the High Sierra backcountry. He then matriculated to Dartmouth College, where he studied electrical engineering before changing course and applying to medical school. He chose orthopedics as away to help improve the daily lives of his patients, and would spend the next decade training and working at the University of California, San Francisco, with additional training in Ottawa and Hawaii. Nori served as an assistant professor at UCSF before transitioning to private practice in Walnut Creek.

Nori had many passions: watching his daughter play basketball, exploring rugged trails with his wife on their endurance horses, waterskiing, snow skiing, chainsawing, backpacking in the Sierra, tinkering, and learning.

He was known for giving freely and enthusiastically of his time and expertise to anyone who needed medical advice or advocacy, and he was always happy to make an extra effort to help out a neighbor in need. He was genuinely interested in others, and was known for his attentiveness and inquisitive nature in every interaction.

His consistent awe and gratitude for the world around him will be missed by all.

Nori is survived by Mo, his wife of41years, and his daughter Whitney; siblings Penny, Sam (Cindy), and Dave (Rebecca); siblings-in-law Tom, Bill, Caroline, and Alan; a large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews; and five horses and four dogs -all of whom loved him dearly. Nori was preceded in death by his parents, Ike and Dina; his sister, Pauli; and his sister-in-law, Missy.

Nori left this world a better place. His kindness to all leaves behind a legacy of light and love.

In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to remember Nori may do so with donations to The Thacher School or to the Napa Community Animal Response Team, or simply by helping a friend or stranger in need.
