Edward Augustus Mills III - 9/22/1938 – 4/25/2024. Edward (Jack) Mills was born in Buffalo New York to Cecelia and Edward Mills. He is survived by his sisters Suzanne (Bill) Walton, Mary (Tom Kretz) Mills, and Patricia (Brian) Fenwick, and his brother John (Debi) Mills as well as his sister-in-law Debby (Rick) Davies, and thirteen nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of fifty-four years, Beverly, and his niece Susana Tabor. One of Jack’s proudest achievements, after being told by his high school guidance counselor that he was not college material, was earning both BA and MA degrees and spending most of his career as a guidance counselor. Jack attended Geneseo College in upstate New York while continuing to help his father on the family dairy farm. His interest in education led him to a teaching position in Patchogue, Long Island where he met Beverly Lynn Davidson, another teacher, who became his wife. They moved to Mt. Clemens, Michigan where Beverly was an elementary school counselor while Jack got his Master’s degree in counseling from Wayne State University before becoming a counselor at Berkley Schools in Berkley, Michigan. After Beverly retired they moved to Holly and Jack continued to teach in Berkley until he retired, often bringing one of his series of giant schnauzers to school with him. He and Beverly found a home on the shores of Bush Lake and a church family at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church of Fenton. Jack took up guitar and played and sang in community groups and with his church choir. With their church, he and Bev worked for environmental and social justice causes. Jack spent part of every summer of his life on the shores of Lake Huron at Pike Bay, Ontario, where his family first vacationed and built cottages over a hundred years ago. Jack would often say that one of the fondest memories of his life was bass fishing with his father on Purgatory Bay just north of the string of Mills cottages. He and Beverly built their own cottage in 1984 and spent most summers there, attending St. Andrews Memorial Church in Howdenvale, Ontario most Sundays. Jack spent his last three years at Brookdale Assisted Living-Grand Blanc, accompanied by his cat Tipper and supported by friends from his church. His outgoing, friendly, humorous personality was certainly the reason for the many lifelong friends he developed wherever he went. He was listening to Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up” on the day he died. According to his wishes Jack has been cremated. Jack’s funeral will be held at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, 106 E. Elizabeth Street, Fenton, Michigan at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2024. His ashes will be placed in the church’s memorial garden. Lunch for attendees will follow.
