Days away from the start of the 2025 season, the Los Angeles Football Club continues to rearrange its roster, announcing a pair of moves Friday.

A consistent contributor the past season and a half, Cristian Olivera, the energetic Uruguayan international attacker who joined LAFC as a U22 Initiative signing in the summer of 2023, was transferred to Grêmio of Brazil’s Campeonato Série for a $4.5 million fee, according to reporter Tom Bogert. The transfer includes a significant sell-on fee over 50% for LAFC, sources said.

Olivera recorded 14 goals and four assists in all competitions last year.

In total, Olivera played 3,700 minutes in 51 appearances, making 42 starts, scoring eight goals in MLS regular season play.

Featured on the wing and at wingback last year, which saw Olivera, 22, earn a call-up to his senior national team for the first time, the attacker arrived late to LAFC’s preseason training camp following an unexcused absence while the details of a transfer were hammered out.

“Cristian has played an important role for our club since he joined us,” LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington said in a statement. “This sale is another example of a talented young player developing here at LAFC, and these resources will now allow us to further strengthen our team. We wish him all the best in his opportunity with Gremio.”

Thorrington also confirmed that 21-year-old Ukrainian defender Artem Smolyakov, from Polissya Zhytomyr of the Ukrainian Premier League, joined Los Angeles through 2028 as a U22 Initiative signing.

“Artem is a highly regarded top young fullback who brings extensive experience to LAFC at a young age,” Thorrington said.

Smolyakov made 40 appearances for Polissya Zhytomyr the past season and a half. The native of Baranivka, Ukraine, has nine appearances for the Ukrainian U-21 national team, helping that group qualify for the 2025 under-21 European Championship in Slovakia this summer.
