Last month, Claire O’Connor helped Gonzaga send the Colorado women’s basketball team into the offseason.
Now, she’s the first transfer addition of the offseason for the Buffaloes.
On Friday, BuffZone confirmed a report by Talia Goodman of On3Sports that O’Connor has committed to CU after two seasons with Gonzaga. A 6-foot guard from Bellevue, Wash., O’Connor will be a junior next season, and she has two years of eligibility remaining.
This past season, O’Connor played in 34 games, with 29 starts, for the Bulldogs (24-11), who reached the quarterfinals of the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament after knocking out the Buffs, 64-55, in the second round on March 23 in Boulder.
O’Connor averaged 7.7 points and 3.5 rebounds, while connecting on 40.8% of her 3-pointers (49 of 120). She scored in double figures 10 times, including a career-high 20 points against Pepperdine on Jan. 25.
Against CU, she had just five points on 2-of-9 shooting but hit a 3-pointer that gave Gonzaga a halftime lead and added a layup in the fourth quarter to help her team hold off the Buffs.
CU has lost 10 players from this year’s roster, six to graduation and four to the transfer portal. Just four players are set to return, while the Buffs will welcome five incoming freshmen.
As a freshman in 2023-24, O’Connor played in 30 games, averaging 5.8 minutes and 1.2 points off the bench.
The Buffs and head coach JR Payne are likely to add several transfers, with a heavy emphasis on finding guards. After adding O’Connor, the Buffs still have five open scholarship spots.
Two Buffs who have transferred have found new homes, as Grace Oliver is heading to Wake Forest and Lova Lagerlid to Loyola Marymount. Erin Powell and Ayianna Johnson are still in the portal, although Johnson has joined the CU track and field team as a thrower.
