While Monarch and Centaurus each got its second straight win under a new coach, top-ranked teams Broomfield (Class 4A) and Holy Family (3A) began their seasons with an emphatic victory of their own.

Programs from the Boulder, Broomfield and Longmont areas went 7-9 in Week 1.

Thursday

Broomfield 44, Frederick 20: CT Worley had a big day, including a 61-yard rushing TD, as the Colorado Preps Media Poll 4A No. 1 Eagles beat Frederick to open their season.

Worley finished with 218 passing yards and another 68 yards on the ground. Mikhail Benner, the team’s standout defensive back and wide receiver who is committed to Air Force, had three receptions for 50 yards and a TD.

The Eagles (1-0) host Monarch on Friday, while the Golden Eagles (0-1) are at Mead.

Holy Family 41, Northridge 6: Monte Samaras threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, and the defending 3A champs began their 2024 campaign with a running-clock victory.

Anthony Scott added 156 rushing yards and a score as the Tigers took a 41-0 lead late in the third quarter, putting into effect the state’s mercy rule.

Holy Family is at Roosevelt on Friday in a matchup featuring 3A’s No. 1 and No. 4 teams.

Monarch 30, Longmont 14: Archie Jahn ran for a score, caught one and set up another with an interception he returned inside the red zone, and the Coyotes began the Jeff Santee era 2-0.

Riley Montemayor threw for 166 yards and two scores in the win, while Longmont’s standout QB, Kolby Holmes, left the game with a leg injury in the second quarter and did not return.

Joey Foot rushed for 103 yards and a score and had 40 yards receiving in the loss.

Monarch is at Broomfield on Friday. The Trojans (0-1) are home against 3A No. 2 Windsor on Saturday.

Friday

Centaurus 38, Boulder 7: The Warriors are 2-0 in their new era under coach Aaron Carlson.

Tysen Burton opened the game with two rushing touchdowns, and Gabe Machado helped seal things with a pick-six in the fourth quarter. Henry Sharpe threw a TD pass to Andre Drapeau in the loss.

Centaurus is at Niwot on Friday, while the Panthers (0-1) are home against Silver Creek.

Silver Creek 39, Skyline 6: The Raptors (1-0) gave new coach Jeremy Mercer a win in his debut.

Servando Morales threw for 158 yards and a score in the loss.

Silver Creek is at Boulder on Friday. Skyline is home against Bear Creek on Thursday.

Mead 33, Pueblo South 14: The Mavericks (1-0) forced an interception and fumble in their season-opening win.

Dating back to the end of the last year, they are now 5-1 in their last six regular-season games. They travel to Frederick on Friday.

Ralston Valley 48, Erie 38: Ronin Ward threw for three scores — two to Gabe Sema — but the Tigers suffered their first loss since their 2023 opener.

On a night that saw the two teams trade big blows, Braylon Toliver and Gavin Lusk each had long TD runs, going for 76 and 86 yards. In the fourth quarter, Ward’s TD pass to Toliver pulled the Tigers within four — 42-38 — with 8 minutes remaining. The Mustangs, though, made two field goals in the final minutes to seal things.

The Tigers are home against 5A No. 2 Mountain Vista on Friday.

Fairview 34, Legacy 7: The Knights had a big night on the ground, leading them past the Lightning in the teams’ first meeting since 2021.

Andrew Gardner threw a TD in the loss.

Fairview (1-0) is at Arvada West on Friday, while Legacy (0-1) is home against Rocky Mountain.

Denver West 35, Prospect Ridge Academy 15: Machaon Puga had a huge night in Prospect Ridge Academy’s loss.

The senior rushed for two scores, forced two fumbles and recorded a sack for the Miners (0-1), who travel to Manitou Springs on Friday.

Walsenburg 64, Lyons 36: The Lions (0-1) lost their first regular-season game since 2021.

Lyons had won 20 straight. It’s home against Byers on Friday.

Dolores 59, Justice 8: The Phoenix (0-1) are at South Park next Saturday.
