Quinten Post, a two-way center for Golden State, posted a double-double, and the Santa Cruz Warriors won their NBA G League season opener 133-118 over the visiting Valley Suns at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Friday night.
Post, a 7-footer out of Boston College, who was selected in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft, finished with game-highs of 28 points and 15 rebounds.
All five of the Warriors’ starters reached double digits in scoring. Former Kentucky star Kevin Knox II, the ninth pick overall in the 2018 NBA Draft, had 24 points and six rebounds. Two-way guard Reece Beekman had 20 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.
Jackson Rowe had 18 points and eight rebounds for Santa Cruz, and Javan Johnson scored 16 points.
Santa Cruz outscored the Suns 56-26 in the paint and outrebounded its opponent 53-29.
Valley finished with 22 3-pointers. Jalen Bridges made five 3-pointers and scored 26 points for the Suns. Teammate Jaden Shackelford made five 3s and scored 23 points, and TyTy Washington Jr. scored 21 points, with three 3s. Moses Wood made five 3s and scored 18 points.
The teams play again in Santa Cruz on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Men’s basketball
At UC Santa Cruz 96, Caltech 46 >> Graduate student guard Ian McCloskey made four 3-pointers and scored 18 points, and the Banana Slugs won their season opener at the West Field House on Friday night.
Junior forward/center Joseph Espy scored 17 points for the Banana Slugs, who led 41-23 at the half, and teammate Ben Lim, a freshman guard out of Branham High in San Jose, had 14 points and five rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench.
UCSC outrebounded Caltech 43-28, and made 25 assists against just 10 turnovers.
UCSC (1-0) hosts Chapman (1-0) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Men’s water polo
Cabrillo 14, Merced 13 >> The Seahawks produced the decisive goal with 22 seconds left in the Coast Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Friday.
Nolan Nguyen scored seven goals for Cabrillo. Aidan Howard scored three goals. Brandon Smith scored twice, and Joe Brennan and Ayden Reed each added a goal.
Goalie Sam Primavera made six saves.
Men’s soccer
At Evergreen Valley 5, Cabrillo 1 >> Luca Venturoli scored on a pass from Kelian Freeman to knot the score at 1-all in the 15th minute, but the Seahawks gave up four answered goals in their Coast Conference crossover match Friday.
Goalie Angel Edgar made three saves for the Seahawks. Evergreen Valley (14-2-3) made four saves.
Cabrillo (6-8-3) plays at San Francisco (11-6-0) on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Women’s soccer
Evergreen Valley 1, at Cabrillo 0 >> Camila Abrego scored in the 73rd minute to help the Hawks sink the Seahawks in the teams’ match Friday.
Cabrillo (5-12-1) closes its season with a home match against Hartnell (12-3-4) on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Women’s volleyball
At Cabrillo 3, Las Positas 0 >> The Seahawks earned a 25-13, 25-17, 25-17 sweep in their Coast Conference North Division match on Friday.
Cabrillo (10-17, 5-5) hosts Ohlone to close the regular season on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
