Our picks for the best Week 6 games in the East Metro and beyond:
Woodbury (3-2) at Mounds View (3-2), 7 p.m.
Tanner Jude’s dual-threat capabilities at quarterback deserve attention, but Mounds View’s defense is quietly dominating games. The Mustangs haven’t allowed more than 14 points in a contest since Week 1. Woodbury needs this win to maintain a clean path to a No. 2 seed in the Class 6A playoffs. Can it post enough points to do so?
Our pick: Woodbury 22, Mounds View 16
Highland Park (4-1) at Minneapolis Washburn (2-3), 6 p.m.
How about Highland Park running back Brandon Jackson? He exploded for 301 rushing yards and five touchdowns in the Scots’ 43-27 win over Como Park last week, moving his total touchdown count to 10 on the season.
When he’s rolling, the Scots are hard to beat.
Our pick: Highland Park 24, Minneapolis Washburn 20
Stillwater (1-4) at White Bear Lake (4-1), 7 p.m.
The records don’t suggest this is a big game, but a Stillwater win over the Bears would muck up the race for a home playoff game in Round 1 in short order. The Ponies can physically match up with White Bear Lake, but no team is going to keep Bears’ star running back Brian White III quiet all night.
So, can Stillwater find enough offense to score the upset? That will likely require another big game from receiver Carter Zollar, who posted another 10 grabs for 152 yards last week.
Our pick: White Bear Lake 21, Stillwater 18 Eden Prairie (5-0) at Moorhead (5-0), 6 p.m.
Two of the top teams in Class 6A square off in a highly-anticipated duel. Unfortunately, the postponement of Eden Prairie’s win over Minnetonka to Monday gives the Eagles a short week to prepare for the Spuds.
That could spell disaster when trying to find a way to slow down an offense featuring Gophers commits Jett Feeney (quarterback), Taye Reich (running back), David Mack (receiver) and Zak Walker (receiver). The Spuds have scored 40-plus points in every game thus far this fall.
Our pick: Moorhead 42, Eden Prairie 24
