Hildegard Louise Smith, aged 103, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2024, in Santa Cruz, California.
Born on May 29, 1921, in Eggersen, Germany, Hilda, as she was affectionately known, was a beacon of love, humor, and warmth to all who knew her.
Hilda's enduring smile and heartfelt kindness left a lasting impact on everyone she met. Her devotion to family was unwavering, supporting her late husband Edward J. Smith (d. 1984), and her children and grandchildren. After raising her three sons in New Jersey, she moved to California in 1992 to be closer to family. Hilda spent 30 years serving Cupertino and Sunnyvale Public Schools, becoming a beloved figure in the community. Even after retiring at 92, she remained active, surrounded by friends who regularly visited her in Santa Cruz. Hilda's hobbies included writing thoughtful letters and notes to friends, immersing herself in books, telling jokes, and spending precious moments with her family. These simple joys brought great fulfillment to her life and to those she shared them with.
She is survived by her loving sons: Edward G. Smith, Richard Smith; and Ronald Smith and his wife, Kim. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Nancy and her husband, Ricardo Romaneiro; Brian Smith; Linsey Smith and her husband, Matthew Dixon; Abigael Smith; and Nicolina Smith. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward Joseph Smith.
