United States midfielder Weston McKennie is among 13 soccer players being investigated for illegal online betting in Italy, according to widespread media reports.
A new investigation by Milan prosecutors stems from evidence given by Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Fagioli in 2023. Both then served lengthy bans, ruling them out for most of last season, after agreeing plea bargains that also included therapy for a gambling addiction.
Juventus midfielder Fagioli — currently on loan at Fiorentina — was banned for seven months after admitting to betting on matches, while Newcastle’s Tonali received a longer suspension of 10 months as his bets also included his team’s games — at the time AC Milan.
The duo are also named in the new investigation, along with Fagioli’s then-Juventus teammate McKennie and nine other current or former Serie A players, as well as Leeds defender Junior Firpo.
There is no evidence that the other players ever gambled on soccer matches but their names emerged from depositions given by Tonali and Fagioli and analysis of their devices.
The players are being investigated for using illegal platforms for online poker and betting on other sports.

Yankees place Stroman on IL >> The New York Yankees placed Marcus Stroman on the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation, one day after he gave up five runs and got two outs in a rainy 9-1 loss to San Francisco.
Stroman went to a hospital for tests on his left knee after throwing 46 pitches in the rain on Friday.
Stroman is 0-1 with an 11.57 ERA in three starts after allowing a three-run homer to Jung Hoo Lee and a two-run double to LaMonte Wade Jr. in his shortest career start that was not interrupted by rain, though Boone said he was not sure if the conditions caused the injury.

Blackhawks’ Maroon plays in final game >> Pat Maroon played his first and his last NHL game at the United Center.
In between, it was quite a ride.
Maroon closed his 14th and final season when the Chicago Blackhawks hosted the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday night. While Chicago has two road games left, Maroon skated in the home finale in front of a group of family and friends before beginning his retirement.
“Every career comes to an end,” Maroon said. “It doesn’t last forever. I let that kind of soak in a little bit. I’m happy (with) where I’m at in my career, where I ended.”
Defenseman Alec Martinez also indicated in a pregame TV interview that it was his last game as well. He joined Maroon in the starting lineup.

The third-ranked Alcaraz reached his 23rd tour-level final, where he will face Lorenzo Musetti of Italy as he bids for his first trophy in Monte Carlo.
Alcaraz was up a break in the first set but Davidovic-Fokina saved three set points to force the tiebreaker.

Florida celebrates >> Florida coach Todd Golden already has a spot picked out for the Final Four net he cut down in San Antonio.
It felt right at home around his neck.
Golden and the Gators were revered in another national championship celebration, this one in front of nearly 60,000 fans at Florida Field during an extended halftime of the annual football spring game. The hoops team has one more get-together on tap: at the White House, presumably this summer.
Golden wore the remnants of one of the nets from the Alamodome; center Micah Handlogten wore the other. Walter Clayton Jr., Alijah Martin and Will Richard carried trophies into the Swamp.

Piastri on pole >> Oscar Piastri took pole in qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix on Saturday as his McLaren teammate and standings leader Lando Norris could only manage sixth.
George Russell was a surprisingly strong challenger and took second for Mercedes, .168 of a second off Piastri’s time. Charles Leclerc qualified third for Ferrari, with Russell’s 18-year-old rookie teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli fourth.
