A smiling former President Joe Biden posted to social media Monday that his cancer diagnosis won’t break him.
“Cancer touches us all,” he tweeted. “Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”
He attached a photo of himself with his wife and their pet cat — he’s smiling, she is not. He posted the update to X, Instagram and Facebook.
The comments urged Biden to “keep fighting” while others celebrated his “grace” in the face of cancer. Still, the political digs are peppered in the string.
Everyone mostly agrees the news of Biden’s prostate cancer is an “aggressive” form.
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” his office said, according to the Associated Press. “The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”
Prostate cancers are graded for aggressiveness using what’s known as a Gleason score. The scores range from 6 to 10, with 8, 9 and 10 prostate cancers behaving more aggressively. Biden’s office said his score was 9, suggesting his cancer is among the most aggressive, AP added.
Today’s White House press briefing included a question about the level of confidence in doctors who care for the president, in light of Biden’s plight.
“The White House physician we have here is phenomenal,” said press secretary Karoline Leavitt. “The team of physicians, particularly at Walter Reed Medical Center, are great.”
Dr Ezekiel Emanuel, a former member of Biden’s transition team, said on MSNBC that the former president probably had the cancer for “maybe even a decade.” He added it’s “surprising” Biden didn’t test for prostate cancer, and now it’s “in the bone.”
“It’s a complicated area,” the doctor added, saying testing for prostate cancer after 70 can lead to over-treatment. “It is a little surprising the doctor didn’t take it,” though he stressed that based on the fact that Biden was the president.
“He had it while he was president. He likely had it at the start of his presidency in 2021,” Emanuel added. “Most White House doctors would recommend getting the test.”
