Marin, CA

Barbara Marie Murphy, an award-winning educator and fearless francophile, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2025, at age 89.

For over 30 years, Barbara inspired her students as a Spanish and French teacher at Miller Creek School in Marin County, California. After retiring, she moved to Germany and taught for the University of Maryland, educating American soldiers at U.S. military bases overseas.

Barbara’s adventurous spirit led her to attend four colleges, including the University of Havana in Cuba. After attaining her teaching degree, she was a Pan Am stewardess on their Miami to South America routes for two years. In 1972, she took a sabbatical from Miller Creek School to study in Aix-en-Provence, France, bringing along her two young sons to immerse them in Provencal culture. Upon their return to the US, Barbara earned a Master’s in Counseling from Dominican College.

Barbara is survived by her sons, Kevin (Heather) and Terry; grandson, Connor; and nieces, Cyndee Sequino and Pam Danesi. A celebration of her life will be held April 27 at Terry’s home in Pleasant Hill, CA (contact family for details).

Barbara boldy embraced her "Born Again" Christian faith in recent years and will be remembered for her fearless and adventurous spirit. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Samaritan's Purse.
